Much in demand as a soloist with orchestra, Mr.\n Sykes has performed under the direction of\n Lorin Maazel, Raymond Leppard, David\n Zinman, and Christoph Eschenbach. He has\n given critically acclaimed performances of\n Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Brahms's\n "Requiem", Mozart's "Requiem", and Mahler's\n songs. He also performed in the world premiere\n of Coming Forth into Day, written by Jehan El\n Sadat (widow of Anwar Sadat) with composer\n Libby Larson. \n\n Following his debut in August 1995 at a Boston\n Pops concert at Tanglewood under John\n Williams, Mr. Sykes was immediately\n re-engaged to accompany the Boston Pops\n and conductor Keith Lockhart on their 1995\n holiday tour. He appeared on the Pops\n televised "Christmas Special" and with the\n Boston Symphony Orchestra on the 1996\n "Salute to Symphony" telecast. Mr. Sykes was\n also featured as soloist with the Los Angeles\n Philharmonic Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl. \n\n Jubilant Sykes won the Metropolitan Opera\n Regional First Place Award in Los Angeles and\n went on to make his debut with the company\n (as Jake in Porgy and Bess) in New York in the\n 1990-91 season. He was later honoured as\n Sacred Music USA's 1996 Vocalist of the Year. \n\n In addition to his work at the Met, Mr. Sykes\n has appeared with the Deutsche Oper Berlin\n (two seasons), the Houston Grand Opera (one\n season), and many other US opera companies.\n On the concert stage, he has sung in La\n Calisto, with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra,\n and the role of Escamillo in Carmen, with the\n Kansas City Symphony. \n\n Among his engagements for the 1997-8\n season are performances at Lincoln Center in\n New York, Kennedy Center in Washington DC,\n and engagements with the Dallas and\n Baltimore Symphony Orchestras. He will also\n sing in Elijah under John Nelson. |
