 Born in Milan in 1957, he gave his debut at the age of only 21 years at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino: from that on he started an important career, which allowed him to become one of the most known and beloved Italian conductors of his generation. He always worked also with non-Italian promoters accompanying the most important singers of the last 20 years.

At the Staastoper of Vienna he led more than thirty performances of the greatest operas of the Italian repertoire, from Traviata to Trovatore, from Barbiere di Siviglia to Elisir d’Amore and I Puritani. At the Opéra Bastille de Paris he conducted new productions of Un Ballo in Maschera and Tosca, at Covent Garden of Barbiere di Siviglia.

New productions he did also at such theatres as the Deutsche Oper Berlin (Il Pirata, Werther, Tosca), Oper Köln (Traviata, Carmen, Cavalleria rusticana and I Pagliacci), Bayerische Staasoper in Munich (Italiana in Algeri and Traviata), Hamburg, at the Teatro Real of Madrid (Don Carlo for the Centennial of Verd’s death), at the Grand Théâtre de Genève (Lucia) and also at the theatres of Marseille and Lausanne, the Palau de la Musica of Barcelona and the Palau de la Musica of Valencia.

At Bilbao, where he led 26 titles he also received the Médaille d’or (in occasion of the 50th anniversary of the ABAO), which have been received also Ettore Bastianini (‘58), Mirella Freni (‘75) and Alfredo Kraus(‘85).

At the Festival of Santander he directed Don Carlo (in 5 acts), Norma and Simon Boccanegra (of which they produced also a cd recording). He is very often invited to the USA and to Japan, and so he worked in theatres as Houston, Dallas and Seattle, or in Tokyo and Kioto opras such as Bohème, Tosca, Un Ballo in Maschera, Madama Butterfly etc. He also directed also in Noway (Oslo) and Finland (Helsinki).

In France where he is considered as one of the most talented conductors, also because of the high numbers of television transmissions he took part and all the opera performances and concerts led by him, send in tv and radio (Requiem by Verdi and Dvorák at the Cathedral of Chartres), he is often present to Paris (Opéra Bastille, Opéra Comique and the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées), to the theatres of Marseille, Nizza and Montpellier.

He was from 1992 to 1997 Musical Director of the Orchestre Colonne, the most ancient French symphony orchestra. He also conducted the Nouvelle Orchestre Philarmonique de Radio France, the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, the Orchestre National de Lille, the Orchestre de Montecarlo, the Orchestre des Pays de la Loire.

In Italy he worked among others in such placet like the Rossini Opera Festival of Pesaro, the Teatro Regio in Parma (Bohème and Un Ballo in Maschera) and the theatres of Palermo and Catania (Norma and Semiramide).

For symphony concerts he conducted all the four orchestras of the Italian Radio and Television RAI, Rome’s Accademia di Sta. Cecilia at, the Orchestra Verdi in Milan, also the Regionale Toscana and Pomeriggi Musicali.

In Japan he performed at the Suntory Hall, the Tokyo Art Space and the Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo (Sagre de Printemps, Messa da Requiem by Verdi, 5th Symphony by Prokofiev), but also important concert halls in Spain, Germany, Switzerland and Romania. During Centennial celebrations of Verd’s death he directed the Maratona Verdiana (form Nabucco to Falstaff) at the Festival of San Sebastian and the Nabucco at the Arènes de Nîmes.

His discography includes the the first registration of Alina by Donizetti, le Convenienze Teatrali, and always by Donizetti for the "Opera Rara" label Elvida and Francesca di Foix (from february 2005 on) and Simon Boccanegra (cd registration live at the Festival of Santander 2003).

His recent engagements include in September 2004 the Requiem by Fauré and a world premiere by Fabio Vacchi with Milan’s Orchestra Verdi, in October Cavalleria rusticana in Athens, in November Nabucco in Bilbao and in January 2005 Manon Lescaut in Seattle, a new production of Tancredi in Toulon, Manon Lescaut in Bari, the inauguration of the Festival Verdi in Parma 2005 with Ernani, Tosca in Malaga, Norma in Sankt Gallen and La Gazzetta at the world famous Rossini Festival in Pesaro in august 2005.

Upcoming events are his MET debut with Cenerentola in November 2005, Macbeth and Turandot in Dresden, Nabucco in tournée in Lombardy and in Cagliari, Tosca at the Konzert und Theater of St.Gallen, Madama Batterfly at A.B.A.O. - O.L.B.E. in Bilabo, La Cenerentola in Minorca, Elisir d’amore at Teatro Regio in Turin, Otello in Malaga, and a new production of Traviata at the Royal Opera House of Stockholm.
