Originally from Ashburton in the South Island of New Zealand, Simon O'Neill is a graduate of the University of Otago and Victoria University of Wellington.\nSince his debut as Turiddu in CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA in 1995 Simon has gone on to build a very successtul singing career throughout New Zealand. He has appeared in concert with Dame Kiri te Kanawa and Dame Malvina Major. A regular artist with the Auckland Philharmonia, Simon has performed as special guest at the Government House matinee concert for the past two years. Professional operatic roles include: Rodolfo, Alfredo, Pang (TURANDOT), Ruiz, Rinuccio (GIANNI SCHICCHI), Gonsalve (Ravel: A SPANISH HOUR), Froh in DAS RHEINGOLD and Monostatos. Originally studying as a baritone whilst at university he performed the title role in GIANNI SCHICCHI and Enrico in LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR. During 1996 Simon studied singing in New York. He retumed to New Zealand to be awarded with several awards. In 1997 Simon was placed third in his first intemational singing competition, the Veronica Dunne Singing Conpetition in Dublin. Other successes include: third place in the 1996 Mobil Song Quest and first place in the Lady Galieghan Operatic Award in Sydney. Simon has recently recorded arias and duets and will appear as the tenor soloist on the new Gareth Farr recording of Te Papa with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Other 1998 engagements include debut as Cassio in OTELLO for The National Opera and guest artist at the Last Night of the Proms with the Auckland Philharmonia.\n |
