Carl John Falkman made his debut as Ferdinand in Lars Johan Werle's opera 'Tintomara' at the Royal Opera in Stockholm in 1973 and since then he has sung several major roles at the same stage. Of these could be mentioned Papageno in Mozart's 'The Magic Flute', Figaro in Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville', Renato in Verdi's 'Un Ballo in Maschera' and Marcello in Puccini's 'La Bohème', as well as the title roles in Tchaikovsky's 'Eugene Onegin' and Mozart's 'Don Giovanni'. @Falkman's international breakthrough came with the role of Escamillo in Peter Brook's famous production of 'Carmen'. The performance, which ran succesfully for three years in Paris, also resulted in a European tour and a movie production. @Since then Carl Johan Falkman's international career has included engagements at the opera houses in Nice, Lausanne and Prague. In 1988 he visited Wiesbaden for a guest appearance with the Royal Stockholm Opera performing Verdi's 'Un Ballo in Maschera' and in 1989 he sang the role of Don Giovanni in Moscow.@Among Carl Johan Falkman's other opera engagements could be mentioned Sander in Grety's opera 'Zemire et Azor' at the Drottningholm Court Theatre in 1993 and a highly acclaimed interpretation of the title role in Verdi's 'Rigoletto' at the Malmö Music Theatre in 1994. At the same theatre he sang one of the leading roles in Kurt Weill's 'One Touch of Venus' in the season 1994/95 and in 1996 he sang Figaro in a production of 'The Barber in Seville' directed by Dario Fo and conducted by Alberto Zedda. @Carl Johan Falkman is a versatile artist. Apart from his career as an opera singer, he has appeared in musical and operettas and also as a character actor in Swedish feature films. In 1995 he played the main part in a film directed by Susanne Bier called 'Pensionat Oskar'. The movie was rewarded with the critic's prize at the Montréal Festival and it also got several Swedish awards, one of them appointing Falkman as the best male film actor of the year. @In the season 1996/97 Falkman performed Professor Higgins' role in 'My fair Lady' at the Oscar's Theatre in Stockholm. Once again he was rewarded, this time as best male actor in a leading role in the musical genre. In the 1997/98 season Carl Johan Falkman sang Danilo in 'The Merry Widow' at the Gothenburg Opera. During 1998 he also participated in two events related to Stockholm - Cultural Capital of Europe: Johan Hammerth's composition Stockholmskantat with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leif Segerstam and Sven-David Sandström's opera Staden at the Royal Opera.@In the season 1999/2000 Carl Johan Falkman added another part to his repertoire by singing the role of Wozzeck at the Royal Opera in Stockholm. In the autumn he sang Papageno in 'The Magic Flute' at the same stage, once again proving himself as a truly acting singer. This spring Carl Johan Falkman sang the title role in 'Rigoletto' in Malmö.@With a great talent of singing as well as acting Carl Johan Falkman is in great demand at master classes. |
