Laurent Wagner was born in Lyon and began his musical studies there with piano, bassoon, harmony and chamber music. Thereafter followed several years as a vocal coach at the Théâtre du Châtelet, and as an orchestra musician (bassoon). In 1982 he joined the Kapellmeister class of Prof. Karl Österreicher at the Vienna Music Conservatory. After spending several years as coach and Kapellmeister at various opera houses in Germany (Heidelberg, Gelsenkirchen and Wuppertal), he was named assistant conductor in 1989 at the Gran Theatre del Liceu in Barcelona. From there he went to the Dortmund City Opera as first Kapellmeister from 1990 to 1994. In 1994 Laurent Wagner was named General Musicdirector of the Saar State Opera in Saarbrücken (Germany). There, until 1998, he conducted numerous concerts and opera premieres. In his capicity as Musicdirector he programmed and performed interesting works such as the Turangalila - Symphony by Messian, the complete orchestral works of Alban Berg, as well as Berg's operas 'Lulu' and 'Wozzeck', and the opera 'Moses and Aron' by Schönberg. The Berg and the Schönberg works were presented as part of a cycle of the second Viennese school which won critical acclaim throughout the region. Laurent Wagner has appeared as guest conductor at the opera in Basel, Switzerland, where he conducted the Swiss premiere of Rossini's 'The journey to Reims' as well as 'Carmen'. In Graz, Austria, he led the productions of 'Rosenkavalier' and 'Il Trovatore'. Other engagements have included the Magdeburg Philharmonic, the Philharmonia Czestochowa, the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as tours to Peking and Italy. Further he conducted concerts and opera productions in Graz, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Chemnitz, St. Gallen, Tokyo, Sao Paolo, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Tallinn, Osnabrück, Munich, Verona and Dublin ('Salome's Irish premiere in the city of Oscar Wilde!). In August 1998 Laurent Wagner took up the post as Opera Director in St. Gallen (Switzerland), where he started the season very succesfully with 'Don Carlo'. The present season includes appearances in Cosenza/I ('Carmen'), Schwerin, Dublin ('Katja Kabanova'), Freiburg and Nantes. 'Le vêpres siciliennes' in their original language french will be the opening premiere of the next season (September 2000). |
