| Braun Lioba | mezzosoprano |
Lioba Braun studied first sacred music before she was trained by Prof. Charlotte Lehmann as a mezzosoprano. Already after two years, she was a prizewinner of important vocal competitions at home and abroad.
After a firm engagement at Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, she changed to Vienna Volksoper and shortly after to the Vienna State Opera where she participated in the RING production with Placido Domingo, Hildegard Behrens and under the baton of Christoph von Dohnanyi. Between 1993 and 2003, Lioba Braun frequently performed famous mezzosoprano parts like Eboli, Dalila, Azucena, Amneris, Gräfin Geschwitz, Ortrud, Kundry, Venus etc. at Nationaltheater Mannheim.
After her spectacular stand-in as Brangäne under Daniel Barenboim at the Bayreuth Festival 1994, she rose to international prominence as a Wagnerian singer and performed for instance at Scala Milan, Dresden Semperoper, at the opera houses of Leipzig, Munich, Berlin, Stuttgart, Cologne, Zürich, Geneva, Brussels, Rome, Naples Genoa, Bologna, Trieste, at Teatro Real Madrid, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, Oviedo, Amsterdam, Vienna State Opera and Salzburg Festival. Thanks to her large Wagnerian repertoire, Lioba Braun was for many years in demand on the Grünen Hügel (Green Hill) at Bayreuth.
Her artistic career also led to collaboration with famous orchestras such as Berlin Philharmonics, NHK Tokyo, Santa Cecilia Rome, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Gewandhaus-Orchestra Leipzig, Staatskapelle Dresden, Munich Philharmonics and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights in this connection was the MAHLER CYCLE 2002 in Munich when she interpreted under Lorin Maazel DAS LIED VON DER ERDE and Solo for contralto in the SYMPHONY No. 3.
Lioba Braun has worked with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Herbert Blomstedt, Daniel Barenboim, Philippe Herreweghe, James Levine, Jesús Lopez-Cobos, Lorin Maazel, Riccardo Muti, Myung-Whun Chung, Sir Neville Marriner, Helmuth Rilling, Peter Schneider, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Horst Stein, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Marcello Viotti.
