Né aux Etats-Unis, Hugh Smith remporte en 1995 le Concours International Luciano Pavarotti. Il fait en 1996 ses débuts italiens au San Carlo de Naples (Pinkerton). Il a également chanté Pinkerton à San Francisco et au Houston Grand Opera, Alfredo ('La Traviata') à Lisbonne et Porto Rico, Laca ('Jenufa') au Festival de Spoletto (USA), Ismaele ('Nabucco') au Carnegie Hall de New York, le 'Requiem' de Verdi en Croatie, à Bologne, Parme et Crémone. Il a également à son répertoire les rôles de Rodolfo 'La Bohème', Faust, Tamino ('La Flûte enchantée'), Manrico ('Le Trouvère'). Projets: Don José ('Carmen') aux Etats-Unis, Foresto ('Attila') à Bologne, Cavaradossi ('Tosca') au Nederlandse Opera, 'Giovanna d'Arco' en concert au Carnegie Hall.
