Born in Ravensburg (Germania) in 1974, Andrea Papi graduated at the «Bruno Maderna» Conservatory in Cesena. In 1995 he won the «A.Belli» Competition of the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale di Spoleto, where he made his debuts as Colline in La Bohème and as Leporello in Prova di Don Giovanni, kindling interest and admiration. |
In the following season he was among the performers of Nino Rota's Notte di un nevrastenico in Cosenza, Matera and Spoleto, staged by Piera degli Esposti. Thereafter he sang in Les Troyens at the Teatro alla Scala conducted by Colin Davis and in the role of Sparafucile in Rigoletto in Metz. |
In the 1996/7 season he performed as Commendatore in Don Giovanni in Ferrara conducted by Claudio Abbado, Colline in La Bohème and Sparafucile in Rigoletto at the Staatsoper of Vienna and as Banquo in Macbeth at the Martina Franca Festival and at the Opéra du Rhin of Strasbourg («...an excellent Banquo, superb timbre, powerful voice and solid grave tone...» wrote Philippe Thanh on Opéra International). |
In 1998 he sang La Bohème (Colline) in Cagliari, Aida (Ramfis) at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo and at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Il barbiere di Siviglia (Don Basilio) at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Rigoletto (Sparafucile) at the Arena di Verona, Don Giovanni in Milan and Spoleto. |
In 1999 Andrea Papi performed La forza del destino (Padre guardiano) at the Teatro alla Scala with Riccardo Muti, and Aida (Ramfis) at the Arena di Verona. |
2000 brought him to perform as Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Wiener Staatsoper and at the Teatro Regio di Torino, Norma (Oroveso) at the Teatro Bellini di Catania, Anna Bolena (Enrico VIII) at the Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli, at the Teatro Donizetti di Bergamo and at the Teatro Ponchielli di Cremona, followed by the successful debut in Aida at the Michigan Opera Theatre in Detroit, sharing the stage with Luciano Pavarotti, by Rigoletto in Toulouse and Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Teatro Regio di Torino. He also portrayed again the role of Ramphis in Aida at the Arena di Verona and at the Arena Sferisterio di Macerata. |
In 2001 Andrea Papi returned to the Teatro alla Scala to sing as Timur in Turandot under the baton of Prètre, to Macerata for Norma and to the Teatro Massimo di Palermo for I Masnadieri, followed by his successful debut in the title role of Mefistofele at the Opéra de Montreal and his first Oviedo Festival production of Ernani. |
His 2001/2 season was marked by the debut at the Opéra de Marseille in Macbeth (Banquo) and by his return to the Teatro Regio di Torino for a new production of La forza del destino and to the Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli for Ernani. Andrea Papi has recently experienced a great success debuting at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin in Lucia di Lammermoor and at the Teatro Real in Madrid in Simon Boccanegra (Jacopo Fiesco). He also premièred the role of Lord Gualtiero Valton in I Puritani at the Opéra de Montecarlo and returned to the Teatro Regio di Torino in Macbeth (Banquo). |
Andrea Papi's concert activity includes Verdi's Requiem in Klagenfurt, at the Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli under the baton of Giuseppe Sinopoli, at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, at the Arena Sferisterio di Macerata and at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome under Myung-Whun Chung. Again at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia with Chung and in Milan with the Orchestra Sinfonica G. Verdi he performed in Beethoven's IX Symphony. |
Highlights of his future engagements include Aida at the Wiener Staatsoper, Simon Boccanegra at the Teatro Regio di Torino, I Masnadieri in Bilbao, I vespri siciliani with the Fondazione Arturo Toscanini di Parma, La Bohème at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. |
