Born in Stockholm, Nina Stemme studied at the Adolf Fredrik School of Music and originally played the viola as main instrument. As a chorus singer she made her first contact with opera. Parallel to her studies of business administration and economics at the University of Stockholm, Nina Stemme followed a two-years-course at the Stockholm Opera Studio and completed her vocal studies at the National College of Opera in Stockholm. |
Debut as Cherubino in Cortona/Italy. Next to two minor roles at the Royal Opera of Stockholm, she had sung in the meantime Rosalinde/FLEDERMAUS, Mimi/BOHEME, Euridice/ORFEO ED EURIDICE and Diana/LA FEDELTA PREMIATA. |
Nina Stemme was finalist of the "Cardiff Singer of the world" and winner of the "Placido Domingo" Competitions. The famous tenor invited her to appear with him in a concert in Paris/Bastille (1993) and Munich (1994).@In 1994, she sang Freia/DAS RHEINGOLD in the Alfred Kirchner/James Levine production at Bayreuth Festival, followed by engagements as Cherubino/LE NOZZE DI FIGARO in Stockholm and for MADAMA BUTTERFLY in Göteborg. |
As from season 1995/96, Nina Stemme joined the Cologne Opera where she added Pamina/DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE and Contessa/LE NOZZE DI FIGARO to her repertoire, soon to be followed by Mimi and Agathe/DER FREISCHÜTZ. Guest appearances at De Vlaamse Opera as Elisabeth/TANNHÄUSER, in Hamburg as Freia and Gutrune in DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN, in Göteborg as Tosca, in Dresden as Contessa/LE NOZZE DI FIGARO (with Colin Davis), and in summer 1998 she had a fantastic success as Elisabeth/TANNHÄUSER at the Savonlinna Festival. She was acclaimed in the role of Katerina/GREEK PASSION at the Bregenz Festival, as Suor Angelica/IL TRITTICO in Cologne as well as in the role of Elsa/LOHENGRIN in Basel.@Recent highlights were her outstanding debut as Senta in THE FLYING DUTCHMAN at the Vlaamse Opera, her phenomenal debut as Marguerite in FAUST at the Festival in Savonlinna, her acclaimed debut at the Metropolitan Opera New York as Senta, MANON LESCAUT at the ENO in London ,Tatjana/EUGEN ONEGIN at La Monnaie in Brussels, Katerina in 'LADY MACBETH OF MZENSK at the Geneva Opera, Sieglinde/ WALKÜRE in the new RING cycle in Cologne, Eva/MEISTERSINGER - concert version at RAI Torino with Jeffrey Tate and Nyssia in KOENIG KANDAULES at the Salzburg Festival. |
In the vocal-symphonic field, Nina Stemme sang amongst others "A Perfido" and the NINTH SYMPHONY by Beethoven and FOUR LAST SONGS and the final scene of CAPRICCIO by Richard Strauss, with conductors such as Roberto Abbado and Antonio Pappano. |
Future projects include among others: her debut as Marschallin in ROSENKAVALIER at the Göteborg Opera and in a new production at Zürcher Festspiele, her first Isolde/TRISTAN UND ISOLDE at the Glyndebourne Festival, a new production of Senta/FLIEGENDER HOLLAENDER at the Wiener Staatsoper and at the San Francisco Opera, Gutrune/GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG at the Sächsischen Staatsoper Dresden, Marie/WOZZECK at the Opéra National de Lyon, Marguerite/FAUST at the Frankfurt Opera, Sieglinde/WALKÜRE at the Teatro San Carlo in Napoli, Jenufa/JENUFA at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Elizabeth und Venus/TANNHÄUSER at the Grand Théâtre de Genève.@ |
