| Ferri Ursula | contralto |
It is difficult to choose a voice category for the versatile Swiss singer Ursula Ferri. She possess a voice that seems to know no limits: her range of over 3 octaves invites comparison with the great singers of the last century, and confirms her place as typical contralto belcantistico. Although she also masters mezzo roles in the German, Russian and French repertory (Erda, Olga, Marfa, Dalilah), she feels most at home in the world of Bel Canto. It is here, with a fine 'messa di voce' (more than raw volume), a tremulous trill and effervescent coloratura, that she can best express the innermost soul of a character. Thus heroes such as Handel's Rinaldo or Rossini's Tancredi and Arsace are her true domaine. She took her first musical steps at the age of four, and at the age of twelve, it was clear to her that she would become an opera singer. She gave her first concerts (as a soprano) two years later, and, while studying the cello as a second instrument, persued her vocal studies in Winterthur and Hamburg, spending a final year in Kiev, the Ucraine. In 1991, working with the voice trainer Elisabeth Züblin-Timoshenko, she changed to the contralto fach, and in 1995 she began to specialize in Bel Canto, under the master supervision of Maestro Nicolas Giusti. The next two seasons she will sing at the Zurich Opera House. In addition to her mother tongue German, she fluently speaks Italian, French, English and Russian; her extensive song repertoire includes all of these languages. It is here, as well as in Oratorio and Concert repertory (Bach's St. Matthew Passion, Verdi's Requiem and Mahler's Lied von der Erde) that she can best display the intense emotional range of her extraordinary voice. |
