Born in Halifax, he studied at the RCM with Lyndon van der Pump and at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Moscow, with Yevgeny Nesterenko. He made his Royal Opera debut in 'Salome' and sang in 'Palestrina' (Metropolitan Opera, New York); his roles for the Company also include Colline, Doctor Grenvil, Nightwatchman (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Capellio (I Capuleti e i Montecchi), Angelotti, Leone (Attila) and King Marke. His others appearances include Claudius in 'Hamlet', Pagano in 'I Lombardi' (QEH, Chelsea Opera Group), Charon in 'Alceste', Polyphemus in 'Acis and Galatea', Winter and Sleep in 'The Fairy Queen' (Linbury Studio Theatre, English Bach Festival), Adès's 'Powder her Face' (Aldeburgh and Almeida Festivals, Channel 4),'L'Efance du Christ' (Greenwich), 'The Dream of Gerontius' (Gloucester Cathedral), Rossini's 'Stabat mater' (RLPO) and Verdi's Requiem (QEH). He made his Glyndebourne Festival debut as the Commendatore.
