| After taking a doctorate in Philosophy and Literature at Oviedo University, he moved to London to study Musicology. |
| In 1980 he made his debut as Director with Verdi's La Traviata in Oviedo, his hometown. |
| From December 1990 to end 1999 he was General Director of the Zarzuela Theatre in Madrid, where his first production in 1982, Donizetti?s Don Pasquale, was followed by many subsequent opera and Zarzuela productions. |
| Emilio Sagi's stage experience covers styles ranging from Baroque Zarzuela to Modern Opera, having directed as a host of leading national and international theatres and festivals: Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Teatro Sao Carlos in Lisbon, Théâtre de l'Odeon in Paris, Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires, Teatro Municipal de Santiago, Chile, Los Angeles Opera, Washington Opera, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, Opéra de Strasbourg, Opéra de Bordeaux, Opéra de Nice, Opéra de Montecarlo, Nissei Theatre and Bunka Kaikan Theatre in Tokyo, Hong-Kong Opera Festival, Teatro de la Maestranza in Sevilla, Palacio Euskalduna in Bilbao, Gran Teatre de Liceu in Barcelona and Teatro Real in Madrid. |
| This year he was nominated member of the Council of the Arts and Sciences of the Principality of Asturias, his homeland. |
| Forthcoming commitments as Director will see him once again in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Montecarlo, as well as New Israel Opera in Tel Aviv, Teatro Comunale di Bologna and VolksOper in Vienna. |
| In July 2002 he has been appointed Artistic Director of Teatro Real in Madrid. |
