Born in Genoa, Roberto Tolomelli studied piano, composition and conducting at the «Nicolò Paganini» Conservatory in his native town, later continuing his studies in Venice with Carlo Zecchi and in Parma with Vladimir Delman. |
From 1982 to 1986 he conducted the Piccola Philarmonia Orchestra in Genoa. |
He was assistant to such conductors as Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Gianluigi Gelmetti and Daniel Oren, working in such theatres as the Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli, Teatro la Fenice di Venezia, Arena di Verona and the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova. |
He made his operatic debut in 1989 conducting Aida at the National Theatre in Zagreb, where he has subsequently returned with Adriana Lecouvreur, Falstaff and Nabucco. In the same year he made his Italian debut, conducting Il trovatore in Piacenza, followed by a German tour of the Arena di Verona with Nabucco, new productions of Norma and Gounod?s Roméo et Juliette at the Opéra de Marseille, La Bohème at the Arena di Verona and Tosca again in Piacenza. |
Roberto Tolomelli's 1996/7 season was marked by a successful new appearance at the Teatro Filarmonico di Verona in Poulenc's Les dialogues des Carmélites di Poulenc. He then led Rigoletto (in Bergamo and in others theatres of Northern Italy), Lucia di Lammermoor (Teatro dell?Opera Giocosa di Savona), Wolf-Ferrari's I quatro rusteghi in Venice and La Bohème at the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, followed by the return to Verona for new productions of Gianni Schicchi, Aida and Rigoletto. Highlights of his recent engagements also include La sonnambula at the Teatro Regio di Torino and at the Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli, Lucia di Lammermoor at the Teatro Grande di Brescia, in Bergamo and Cremona, Il trovatore at the Teatro Comunale di Modena and at the Teatro Valli di Reggio Emilia, as well as the debuts in Les contes d?Hoffmann in Livorno, Pisa, Modena, Ferrara and Ravenna, and in Macbeth and Simon Boccanegra in Trapani. He has recently experienced a great success both of public and press with his conducting of Luisa Miller in Como, Tosca at Torre del Lago Festival and L'amico Fritz in Pisa, Lucca and Mantova. |
Roberto Tolomelli also enjoys a brilliant operatic activity in some of the most important foreign musical institutions. He led, among others, Rigoletto at the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, Roméo et Juliette and Rigoletto in Bilbao, La traviata at the Staadttheater in St. Gallen, Nabucco at the Salzburg Festspielhaus and La sonnambula at Teatro São Carlos, Lisbon. During Spring 2000 he was invited by the Teatro Real in Madrid to led Ernani and La sonnambula, followed by a new conducting of Don Carlo in Brno, La traviata in Seoul, and by the recent debut in Maria Stuarda in Oviedo, with Roberto Alagna and Angela Gheorgiu, where he will soon return for Roberto Devereux. |
On the concert side, he gained personal successes conducting several symphonic concerts with the orchestras of the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, Teatro Regio di Torino, Teatro Verdi di Trieste and of the Teatro Massimo Bellini di Catania, the Orchestra dei Pomeriggi Musicali and Angelicum in Milan, the Orchestra da Camera di Bologna, the Teatro Filarmonico di Verona, the Orchestra Sinfonica di San Remo, the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana and the Arena di Verona Orchestra. |
Highlights of his future engagements include Il Trovatore in Trapani, La Bohème at the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova and La sonnambula at the Théâtre Municipal d'Avignon. |
