| Canadian bass Phillip Ens, studied at L'Atelier Lyrique de l'Opera de Montreal, receiving the Aria Prize in 1988 as vocalist deemed most likely to have an international operatic career. Mr. Ens made his operatic debut as the Marchese di Calatrava in the 1985 Manitoba Opera production of La Forza del Destino. Other engagements@throughout Canada quickly followed. With L'Opera de Montreal he sang The Speaker (Die Zauberfloete) and Masetto (Don Giovanni). Numerous appearances@with the Vancouver, Edmonton and Manitoba Operas included roles such as Sarasto (Die Zauberfloete), Colline (La Boheme), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Banco (MacBeth), the King (Aida), Masetto, and Don Basilio (Barbiere di@Siviglia). Other credits include the title role in Le Nozze de Figaro with the Pacific Opera, Frere Laurence (Romeo et Juliette) with the Calgary Opera, Don Basilio at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa and his Canadian@Opera Company debut as Don Fernando in Fidelio. Mr. Ens made his American stage debut in 1989 with the Philadelphia Orchestra singing Colline. Other performances in the United States include Nourabad (Pearl Fishers) and Sparafucile with Opera Company of Philadelphia, a role he also sang with the Denver and Pittsburgh Operas, and Ramfis (Aida) with the Austin Lyric Opera. Phillip Ens has been a frequent quest soloist with Symphony Orchestras in Canada and Europe. Several appearances with the Montreal Symphony under the direction of Charles Dutoit include Beethoven's Ninth and concert performances of Pelleas et Melisande, which was also recorded and released under the Decca label. Other performances include Beethoven's Ninth with the Toronto and Calgary Symphony Orchestras, Beethoven' Mass in C with the CBC Orchestra in Vancouver, Mozart's Requiem with the Quebec Symphony and L'Orchestre Metropolitan, and An Evening at the Opera with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa. Numerous appearances in Europe include Tippet's A Child of our Times with the Giessener Philharmonic, Schubert' Mass in A flat with the National Orchestra of Spain in Madrid, Verdi's Requiem with the Praque Philharmonic, a concert performance at the Royal Festival Hall in London of Stravinsky's The Rakes Progress with the BBC Orchestra under the direction of Andrew Davis, and Mozart's Requiem with Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert in Salzburg, with a repeat performance at the Royal Albert Hall in the B.B.C. Proms series. Most recently he was heard in the same piece at the Edinburgh Festival. As a leading bass with the Staatstheatre Stuttgart for four seasons, Mr. Ens sang to critical acclaim such roles as Sarastro, Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Banco (MacBeth), Colline, Il Commendatore (Don Giovanni), Eremit (Der Freischuetz), a highly applauded Pimen in Boris Gudunov, and Fafner(Rheingold/ Siegfried) followed by Hunding (Die Walkuere) in a new production of the Ring Cycle. Other credits include Colline at the Bayerischen Staatsoper, the role of Claggart in Welsh National Opera's new production of Billy Budd, and Carontes in Monteverdi's Orfeo at the Wiener Festwochen, a role he repeated in 1999 with the Bayerischen Staatsoper. Mr. Ens also sang Padre Guardiano in La Forza del Destino with the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and Sarastro (Magic Flute) with Hamburgische Staatsoper and the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin. More recently Mr. Ens made his Metropolitan Opera debut in the role of Hunding (Walkuere) under the direction of James Levine, and his debut with Opera National de Paris as the Commendatore in their production of Don Giovanni. Future engagements include the role of Gremin (Eugene Onegin) in Brussels,@Commendatore (Don Giovanni) with with the English National Opera in London and Glyndebourne, Hunding with the Chicago Lyric Opera, Basilio (Barbiere di Siviglia) with the San Fransisco Opera, and Wurm in Luisa Miller at the Metropolitan Opera and the Royal Opera House in London.@ |
