| Joyce DiDonato, mezzo soprano, has been recently hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as the Rossini mezzo for the next generation following a recent performance of the title role in Rossini's 'La Cenerentola'. Hailed as "a singer of considerable accomplishment and even greater promise", she is a 1997 Sullivan Award Winner and recipient of a Richard F. Gold Career Grant from the Shoshanna Foundation. Ms. DiDonato grew up in Prairie Village, Kansas and attended Wichita State\n University. Before joining the Houston Opera Studio in the fall of 1997, she attended the internationally renowned Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia where she appeared as Hänsel, Olga and Dorabella. In the summer of 1996, upon personal invitation by Maestro Gian Carlo Menotti, Ms. DiDonato made her European debut singing the role of Ino ('Semele') with the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. For the 1996-97 Houston\nGrand Opera season, she performed as Sièbel,Fyodor , Second Lady ('The Magic Flute'), and as Princess Grace Kelly in the World Premiere of 'Jackie O', recorded by Decca Records on the Argo label. |
