| Marina Mescheriakova, a native of Volgograd, Russia, studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and then with Licia Albanese in New York before joining the Bolshoi Opera. After performances at the Wexford Festival and winning major competitions in Germany and Austria, she sang the role of Elisabetta in "Don Carlo" with the Estonian National Opera, in Helsinki, and at the Vienna Staatsoper. In 1997, Ms. Mescheriakova made debuts with the Canadian Opera Company, the Royal Opera in Stockholm, the Bregenz Festival, and the Monte Carlo Opera, ending the year with her Metropolitan Opera debut, again as Elisabetta, with Myun-Whun Chung conducting. She has since been heard at the Bayerische Staatsoper and in 1999 for the first time at the Salzburg Festival, as Elisabetta di Valois, the role she repeats here this summer. |
