Maurizio Benini made his conducting debut at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna with Il signor Bruschino by Rossini. Other engagements in important Italian theatres and festivals followed, and in 1992 he made his debut at the Teatro alla Scala with La donna del lago and Don Carlo, followed by I Pagliacci, Don Pasquale and Rigoletto. In 1992 he also conducted La scala di seta at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, where he returned in the following seasons for a concert with the Orchestra of the Süddeutscher Rundfunk (recorded for Sony), for L'occasione fa il ladro, Le siège de Corinthe and again for La scala di seta. |
From 1984 to 1991 he was Principal Conductor of the Filarmonici of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, with whom he frequently toured in Europe and Japan, with internationally renowned soloists and recorded piano concerti of Haydn and Mozart with Jörg Demus. |
Maurizio Benini enjoys a continuous collaboration with the Opéra de Paris, where he debuted in 1993 with Adriana Lecouvreur and where he has subsequently led Madama Butterfly, Lucia di Lammermoor, La Cenerentola, Nabucco, La traviata, Faust and Tosca. He will return on the podium of the Opéra for a new production of Il trovatore. |
Between 1995 and 1997 he served as Principal Conductor of the Wexford Festival, where he enjoyed great success with Pacini's Saffo, Donizetti's Parisina, Rossini's Stabat Mater and Mercadante?s Elena da Feltre. |
His career brought him on the podium of the Wiener Staatsoper, where he debuted with I puritani in 1996, to the Lyric Opera of Chicago for his recent debut in La traviata, and to the Metropolitan Opera in New York for L'elisir d'amore (1998), Rigoletto (1999) and, more recently, La traviata. Maurizio Benini will return to the Metropolitan Opera to conduct Il barbiere di Siviglia. |
After his successful debut at the Royal Opera House-Covent Garden in London with Un giorno di regno in 1999 and his recent conducting of La sonnambula, Roberto Devereux and Rigoletto. Maurizio Benini is at present engaged in London in new production of Luisa Miller, and will return there for La traviata and Faust. |

He has recently conducted Don Carlo and an important rossinian cycle, including Mosè in Egitto, La Cenerentola and Il turco in Italia, at the Opéra in Montecarlo; a new production of La traviata at the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux; Le Siège de Corinthe and Don Pasquale at the Opéra de Lyon. Maurizio Benini was also recently invited by the Teatro alla Scala to conduct La sonnambula, by the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova for Rigoletto, and by the Teatro Comunale di Bologna for Un giorno di regno and La favorita, where he will return for La figlia del reggimento. |
Prestigious will be his debut on the podium of the Teatro Real in Madrid during the 2003/4 season in Tosca, as well as his return to the Gran Teatre de Liceu in Barcelona to led Turandot and Don Carlo. |
