In 1993 the Finnish soprano Kirsi Tiihonen finished her studies at the Sibelius Academy with Liisa Linko-Malmio. Since winning two national singing competitions - the Timo Mustakallio and the Lappeenranta 'she has had engagements as orchestra and choir soloist, given a number of recitals throughout Finland and appeared on radio and television. In 1991 she won first prize in the International Rio de Janeiro singing competition. In 1994 she won the first prize in the International Mirjam Helin competition and in 1995 she represented Finland in The Cardiff Singer of the World competition, where she won the prestigious Lied prize. |
Kirsi Tiihonen was engaged at the Finnish National Opera from 1994-96, during which time she sang Elisabetta in Don Carlos, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni Leonora in Fidelio and Desdemona in Otello and has been a visiting performer since that time. In 1997 she made her debut at the Savonlinna Opera Festival as Elisabeth in Tannhäuser and returned the following summer. In the 1997-98 season she sang the roles of Helmwiege in Die Walküre and the Third Norn in Götterdämmerung at the Dutch National Opera and Hamburg State Opera. She also performed as Elisabetta of Don Carlo in the Braunschweig Opera. |
Kirsi Tiihonen has appeared as an orchestra soloist in the major concert Halls of Europe, such as the Philharmonie of St Petersburg (Lahti Symphony Orchestra), the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam with Ingo Metzmacher as conductor, the BBC Proms in Royal Albert Hall in London with Maestro Osmo Vänskä, the Berlin Philharmonie under the batton of Vladimir Achkenazy etc. She has performed in Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Poland, Hungary, the Netherlands, Italy, France, South Korea Japan and Singapore. |
In September 1999 Ms. Tiihonen sang Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder at the Helsinki Festival with The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jukka-Pekka Saraste. In fall 1999 she was engaged at Finnish National Opera to sing Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes which she also sang on the tour to Berlin (Deutsche Oper). In April 1999 she made her debut in the role of Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro in Frankfurt Opera and continued to sing in this role in Helsinki in 1999-2000. The spring season 2000 she returned to the Braunschweig State Theatre in Germany, where she sang the title role of Aida. She also appeared in Schwerin State Theatre's new production of Fidelio in the role of Leonora. In fall 2000 she appeared in the word premier of Aulis Sallinen's latest opera King Lear at the Finnish National Opera and soon after followed her first Leonora of Verdi's Il Trovatore, also in Helsinki. In January 2001 Ms Tiihonen sang the 'Sieben frühe Lieder' by Alban Berg with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Mark Wigglesworth. The spring 2001 brought her again to Helsinki where she sung Elisabetta in Don Carlos and the Female Chorus in The Rape of Lucrecia. In May 2001 she made her debut as Siglinde in Die Walküre by Wagner at the Braunschweig Opera. Ms. Tiihonen has sang two CDs for NAXOS record company; the songs of Toivo Kuula and Leevi Madetoja (1999) and Sibelius (2001). |
In July 2001 she returned to the Savonlinna Opera Festival singing the title role of Aida. This season was full of new challenges for her. She started by singing her first Gutrune (Götterdämmerung) in Braunschweig. In November she made her debut in the role of Amelia in 'Un ballo in maschera' by Verdi at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen and in spring 2002 she will sing for the first time Micaela in 'Carmen' at the Finnish National Opera. She participated also to the tour of the 'Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, in Japan singing several roles in Wagner's 'Der Ring des Nibelungen'. In spring 2003 Ms. Tiihonen will sing her debut as Isolde at the Gothenburg Opera.@ |
