Ramón Vargas is one of the most adcclaimed tenors of the day and has been praised internationally for his appearances on the world's leading stages. Born in Mexico City, Vargas made his professional debut in 1983 in Puccini's Il tabarro. In 1986 he won the Enrico Caruso Competition in Italy, the first of many such awards, and then joined the Lucerne Opera where he debuted roles such as the title role in Werther and Elvino in La sonnambula. Important international debuts followed quickly. In 1992 Vargas made his Metropolitan Opera debut in Lucia di Lammermoor opposite June Anderson and in 1993 made his La Scala debut as Fenton in a new production of Falstaff conducted by Riccardo Muti. Vargas has returned regularly to the Metropolitan for other roles, including Almaviva and the Duke in Rigoletto, and has returend to La Scala for La traviata. In the fall of 1996 Vargas made his stage debut in Paris in a new production of rigoletto at the Opéra Bastille and returned to Covent Garden in the same work in 1997. In the fall of 1997 Vargas performed in a new production of La cenerentola at the Metropolitan, opposite Cecilia Bartoli and conducted by James Levine. He then went on to the Opéra National de Paris to appear in a new production of La traviata opposite Angela Gheorhiu and conducted by James Conlon. He returned to the Vienna State Opera for Lucia with Edita Gruberova.
