Chalker Margaret
soprano

When Margaret Chalker sang her first Marschallin in Richard Strauss' 'Der Rosenkavalier' in the new production at the Nationaltheater in Prague, conducted by Jiri Kout, it marked one of the pinnacles in her love affair with Straussian heroines. Having sung more than forty performances of 'Der Rosenkavalier' as Sophie and building on her 'magnificent Ariadne' (Opernwelt) in a new production of 'Ariadne auf Naxos'.

Blessed with a vibrant and honest voice with a luminous upper range, Margaret Chalker has sung in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Hannover, Leipzig (New production of 'Die Fledermaus'), Salzburg, Wiesbaden, and St. Gallen (New production of 'Don Giovanni') adding Fiordiligi ('Cosi fan tutte'), Donna Anna ('Don Giovanni'), Nedda ('I Pagliacci'), Agathe ('Freischütz'), Micaela ('Carmen') and Janacek's 'Cunning Little Vixen' to her repertoire.

As a member of the Opernhaus Zurich since 1987, she has successfully sung more than 30 roles in over 500 performances in operas by Mozart, Strauss, Wagner, Verdi, Puccini, Menotti and others. She has sung with conductors such as von Dohnanyi, Fedoseyev, Harnoncourt, Kout, Luisi, Pesko, Santi, Sawallisch, G. Schwarz, Thielemann, Viotti, Weikert and Welser-Möst.@With the Zurich Opera Orchestra, she sang Dallapiccola's 'Cantate di Natale', and has performed often with the chamber ensemble 'opera nova', essaying for example Schönberg's 'Pierrot lunaire'. The challenge for her New York City debut with the Music Today Orchestra was Schönberg's 'String Quartet No. 2'. In Zurich's production of Henze's 'Prinz von Homburg' Margaret Chalker sang Natalie.

Margaret Chalker has sung with the American Opera Companies of Houston, Omaha, Syracuse, Glimmerglass, Gold Coast of Ft. Lauderdale, as well as the Symphony Orchestras of Seattle, Buffalo, El Paso, Colombus, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and numerous seasons with the Mostly Mozart Orchestra at Lincoln Center in New York City.

Margaret Chalker has performed extensively in the concert repertoire, having sung Strauss' 'Four Last Songs', Mendelsohn's 2. Symphony 'Lobgesang' (available on CD with the Seattle Symphony), Beethoven's Symphony Nr. 9 and 'Missa Solemnis, Brahm's 'Deutsches Requiem' and works by Mauricio Kagel.

Singing Marta in a new production of 'Tiefland' (d'Albert) at the Hannover State Opera, Iseult in the new production of 'Le Vin Herbé' (Frank Martin) in Zurich, followed by Freia in the new 'Rheingold' and Elisabetta in 'Don Carlos' (New Production 2002 Kaiserslautern) as well as concert performances of unusual works (Countess in Schuberts 'Graf von Gleichen' in Graz and Arsinoé in d'Alberts 'Die toten Augen' - available on CD - in Dresden) Margaret Chalker continues to prove her versatile talent.
