Born and raised in Leipzig, Nadja Michael studied voice in Stuttgart and at the University of Indiana in Bloomington. After winning several prizes at a number of major singing competitions, she has performed in the most prestigious opera houses throughout the world, including the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Berlin State Opera, the Dresden State Opera, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Royal Opera House-Covent Garden in London, the Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli, the New National Theatre in Tokyo, the Théâtre de La Monnaie in Brussels, the Teatro La Fenice in Venice and the Zurich Opera House, as well as the Macerata, Salzburg and Glyndebourne festivals.

Nadja Michael´s recent engagements include her debuts at the Wiener Staatsoper in Carmen and in Florence in the Maggio Musicale's new production of Les troyens as Kassandre, Amneris in Aida at the Arena di Verona, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin and in Genoa, Eboli in Don Carlo at the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova.

Her repertory also includes Dalila in Samson et Dalila, Azucena in Il trovatore, and Charlotte in Werther. In addition to Brangäne, her Wagnerian roles include Venus in Tannhäuser, Fricka in Das Rheingold and Waltraude in Götterdämmerung. In 2004 she will make her role debut as Kundry in Parsifal in Frankfurt.

Her concert repertory ranges from Bach and Händel to Verdi and the late Romantics. She has recently performed Mahler´s Second Symphony, Kindertoten-Lieder, Song of Earth and Rückert Lieder in London, Zürich, Naples and Verdi's Requiem with the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Stockholm in New York and Washington.

This season, Nadja Michael will perform Das Lied von der Erde with the Israel Philharmonic in a tour to Spain, Aida at the Staatsoper unter den Linden in Berlin, as Dido in Chicago, as Venus for the Semperoper Dresden and in Munich, and as Carmen at Wiener Staatsoper and at the Bayerische Staatsoper. Forthcoming engagements also include Mahler's Second Symphony with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, Zemlinsky's Maeterlinck Lieder with Zubin Mehta at the Salzburg Festival, Aida at the Semperoper Dresden and at the Los Angeles Opera, Parsifal at the Oper Frankfurt, Don Carlos at the Wiener Staatsoper, Hamburgische Staatsoper and Staatsoper unter den Linden and Carmen in Vienna.

Her discography includes recordings with Helmuth Rilling, Gustav Kuhn and Giuseppe Sinopoli; upcoming releases are Beethoven's Missa Solemnis conducted by Manfred Honeck and Berlioz's The Childhood of Christ with Fabio Luisi.
