American baritone, Ron Peo, has been engaged as the leading baritone at the Städtische Bühnen in Nürnberg since 1998. He opened the 1998/99 season in the newly renovated Opera House as the title character in Busoni's Doktor Faust which was recently broadcast by Bayerischer Rundfunk. In the 2000 - 2001 season he will add several new roles to his extensive repertoire. He premieres in the title role of Der Fliegende Holländer in Trieste and Udine, Italy. Other additions include Golaud in Pelleas et Melisande, and the baritone soloist in Britten's War Requiem. He reprises performances of Germont in La Traviata, Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Pizarro in Fidelio, Jochanaan in Salome, and Escamillo in Carmen. Peo was a voice student of Metropolitan Opera Wagner Soprano Margaret Harshaw at Indiana University in Bloomington / USA, where he received his Masters Degree in Voice and Opera. He was a prize winner in numerous singing contests, including the Metropolitan Opera Auditions, the Rosa Ponselle Awards and the MacAllister Competition. After completion of his degree he was engaged by Beverly Sills as an ensemble member of the New York City Opera, where he made his debut as Germont in La Traviata. There he sang various Italian baritone roles including Ezio in Attila, Marcello in La Boheme, Tonio in I Pagliacci, Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana, Figaro in Barbiere di Siviglia, and Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, to name a few. Peo has sung in opera houses throughout the world. In America, he has performed with many opera companies, including Seattle Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, the Chatauqua Opera, and the Greensboro Opera. He also performed on tour with the New York City Opera and the San Francisco Opera. Peo made his European debut as Barak in Die Frau ohne Schatten at Bremer Theater in 1990. Also in Europe he has performed the title role in Simon Boccanegra with the Royal Opera Stockholm at the Finnish National Opera, as well as Posa in Don Carlo at the opera in Basel. Among his many appearances, he has sung Escamillo in Carmen and the title role in Nabucco at the Konzertante Oper Hamburg, Beckmesser in Meistersinger at the opera theaters of Stuttgart, Kassel, and Bremen, Rigoletto in Essen, and Scarpia in Tosca in Düsseldorf and the Tales of Hoffmann Four Villains in Essen. In Asia he has performed diverse concerts in Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, and Korea. Peo's wide array of Verdi-Repertoire also includes the title role in the Bayerischer Theaterpreis award winning production of Macbeth, as well as Don Carlos in La forza del Destino and Renato in Un Ballo in Maschera, among others. Additional Puccini roles include Michele in Il Tabarro, and Sharpless in Madama Butterfly. Further examples of his German repertoire are the title role in Cardillac by Hindemith, Mandryka in Arabella, and Wotan in Das Rheingold, and The Wanderer in Wagner's Siegfried.
