Since 1995 Paul Mägi is an artistic director and chief conductor of the Estonian National Opera in Tallinn.

In 1978 he founded the Estonian Radio Chamber Orchestra and was its artistic director and chief conductor. In the years 1984-1991 Paul Mägi was engaged as a conductor at the Estonian National Opera. He was praised by critics for his sensitivity and style in the interpretation of Händel's 'Alcina', Tubin's "The Parson of Reigi" and ballets Denissov's 'Confession' and Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet". He conducted also guest performances at the Bolshoy Theatre in Moscow, and at the "Händel-Festspiele" in Germany.

In the years 1990-1994 Paul Mägi was the artistic director and chief conductor of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra in Riga. He has conducted the orchestra in famous concert-halls of Western Europe - in Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria etc. The orchestra participated in international festivals in Amsterdam famous Concertgebow, Festival Costa do Estoril in Portugal, Chichester Festivities in Great Britain, Wiltz Festival in Luxembourg, Festival de Wallonie in Belgium, Fetes Musicales en Touraine with S. Richter, Festival de Saint-Riquier, Festival Hardelot in France.

As a guest Paul Mägi has conducted orchestras in Moskow, Finland, Ukraine, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Italy, Bulgaria, Poland, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Ecuador and Ireland.

Paul Mägi is also a prominent jazz violinist. He has played in Hungary in Debrecen Festival, Bulgaria, Cuba, Finland, Germany, Belgium, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britain, USA etc. He has played with the London's BBC Symphony Orchestra and with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

International productions: Rossini's L'italiana in Algeri, Verdi's Il trovatore, J. Strauss' Die Fledermaus in Finland, Puccini's Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi in Sweden, Dargomizhsky's Rusalka in Wexford Festival in Ireland, Mussorgski's Boris Godunov in Nantes Opera, Bizet's Carmen in Belgium and Cyprus, with Moskow 'Helikon' opera company in Salzburg Festspielhaus, French Radio Festival in Montpellier and Champs-Elyseés theatre in Paris, etc.

Productions at the Estonian National Opera: Puccini's La Boheme, Suor Angelica, Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Verdi's Nabucco, La traviata, Don Carlo and Ernani, Bizet's Carmen, Dargomizhsky's Rusalka, Nicolai's Die lustige Weiber von Windsor, J. Strauss' Wiener Blut, Die Fledermaus and Eine Nacht in Venedig, Lehar's Die lustige Witwe, Tamberg's Cyrano de Bergerac, Tubin's The Goblin, Kangro's The Heart, R. Strauss' Salome, Mussorgski's Boris Godunov.

For his artistic activity Paul Mägi has been awarded the Cultural Award of the Estonian Republic, the Annual Award of the theatre Union in 1999, Music Award of the Estonian Culture Fund, and the Cultural Award of the Latvian Republic.@
