Studies at the Musikhochschule Berlin and with Hans Nachod in London were interrupted by service in World War II and internment as a prisoner of war. He began his career in the municipal theater of Flensburg before being engaged in Mainz and in the Opera house of Essen, and later at the Opera of Cologne. He remained a member of the company until 1984, returning later as a guest. He was a member of the Opera houses of Frankfurt a.M. (1958-63) and Hannover (1963-67). In the Holland Festival 1958 he sang in Schönberg's Von Heute auf Morgen (produced again in concert form in the Royal Festival Hall in London in 1963). In 1956 he was a guest at the Städtische Oper Berlin, in 1955 and 1960 at the Opera of Zürich, in 1967 at the Monnaie in Brussels (as Walther von Stolzing), and repeatedly since 1969 at the Staatsoper Vienna. He also sang as a guest in the State Opera's of Munich and Stuttgart as well as in 1963 at La Scala in one of his greatest roles, Loge. In 1971 he sang in the Teatro Communale Bologna as Walther von Stolzing. Other roles included Florestan, Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, Parsifal and Radames. In 1959 he participated at the Opera of Cologne in the world premiere of the opera Der Tod des Giorgi Rasputin by Nikolas Nobikov.
