He was trained at the Academy of the Badische Staatstheater in Karlsruhe and under Fritz Harlan in Freiburg. He made his debut in 1938 at the Heidelberg Opera Festival, and sang Renato in Un ballo in maschera that same year in Koblenz. For the next three years, 1939-41, he was engaged by the Stadttheater in Augsburg, but was ordered to take up weapons factory work from 1942 to 1944 and eventually became a soldier. He was engaged by the Bavarian Staatsoper in Munich in 1946, and he became a member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf-Duisburg in 1958. He made successful guest appearances at the State Operas of Vienna and Stuttgart, at La Scala and the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. In 1953, he traveled with the Munich Opera to Covent Garden (where he had previously appeared in 1952) to sing La Roche in the British premiere of Capriccio. At the Glyndebourne Festival of 1954 he took on the role of Leporello, followed by La Roche in 1963 and 1964, and the Minister in Fidelio in 1963. At the Salzburg Festival he took part in the world premiere of Carl Orff's Antigonae (1949). He also sang at the Bregenz and Florence Festivals, with the opera companies of Zurich, Amsterdam and Philadelphia, at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and at the Komische Opera in the former East Berlin (Papageno in Walter Felsenstein's Zauberflöte production of 1958). In 1971-72, he appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he made his debut as Beckmesser in Die Meistersinger. He also sang Beckmesser in Bayreuth in 1974. In addition, he demonstrated his versatility in a broad concert repertory. He also had a special affection for operetta roles and has toured throughout Germany as Teyve in Fiddler on the Roof. He is married to the soprano Christine Görner.
