The Argentinian tenor Raul Giménez made his professional début as Ernesto in Donizetti's Don Pasquale at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires in the 1980-81 season. He made his first appearance in Europe at the Wexford Festival in 1984 in Cimarosa's Le astuzie femminili. Specialising in Italian repertoire of the nineteenth century, he appeared in Venice, Naples and others Italian cities in Rossini's Armida, Otello end Tancredi, and in Roma in Mozart's Il re pastore and in La sonnambula. He made his London Covent Gardener début in 1990 as Ernesto, a role he had undertaken in Dallas. A series of important engagements in major opera-houses has continued, with a 1993 début at La Scal, Mialn, in Tancredi, and a parallel career in the concert-hall.
