Bass Franz-Joseph Selig studied at the Cologne Hochschule für Musik, initially specializing in music for the Catholic church and subsequently pursuing vocal studies with Claudio Nicolai. His first engagement was with the Aalto Theater in Essen, where he remained until 1995, thereupon becoming a guest artist with the Cologne Opera, singing in operas by Mozart, Wagner and Verdi. Additional guest engagements followed: with the Royal Opera Covent Garden, the Théâtre de la Monnaie, and the Opéra de Lyon. In 1995/96 he appeared at La Scala as Sarastro in "Die Zauberflöte" under Riccardo Muti, the role which also served as his debut vehicle at the Chicago Lyric Opera, San Francisco Opera, the Bastille Opera, Metropolitan Opera, and the Vienna Staatsoper. Mr. Selig has performed - in concert and oratorio, as well as in opera - with conductors including Zubin Mehta, Christoph Eschenbach, Herbert Blomstedt, Bernard Haitink, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Sir Neville Marriner, Kent Nagano, Antonio Pappano, Lorin Maazel, and René Jacobs. Mr. Selig appeared as Sarastro at the 1999 Salzburg Festival, under Christoph von Dohnányi. |
