He studied voice at the Northwest German Music Academy in Detmold and debuted in 1959 at the opera house in Essen as Mozart's Figaro. He remained active in Essen until 1962. In 1960, he was engaged by the Municipal Opera (later the Deutsches Opera) in Berlin. At the same time, he was under contract with the Hamburg Staatsoper. In addition, he also belonged to the ensemble of the opera in Frankfurt am Main. In Berlin, he experienced great successes in 1961 as Figaro, in 1964 as Barak in Die Frau ohne Schatten, and in 1969 in the premiere of the opera 200 000 Taler by Boris Blacher (at the Deutsche Opera on 25 September 1969). From 1966-82, he was heard at the Vienna State Opera as the Musiklehrer in Ariadne auf Naxos, Alfonso in Così fan tutte, Kothner in Meistersinger, Pizarro in Fidelio, Orest in Elektra, and Borromeo in Hans Pfitzner's Palestrina. Guest appearances and concert tours took him to North America, Japan and Korea. In 1960, he had a long engagement as a guest artist at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. In 1961 he debuted at the Metropolitan Opera as Kaspar in Der Freischütz. Further guest appearances took him to Copenhagen, Helsinki, Amsterdam, Montreal, Mexico, and the leading opera houses in German-speaking countries. He appeared as Amfortas and Kurwenal at the Bayreuth Festival from 1968-69 and as Harlekin in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Salzburg Festival in 1964. He took part in tours of Japan with the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Vienna State Opera. He also sang Hans Sachs, Jokanaan, Falstaff, and the title hero of Hindemith's Mathis der Maler at Zurich Opera and other theaters. In 1992 he appeared at the State Theater in Karlsruhe as Barak and in 1996 at the Deutschen Oper Berlin as Kurwenal. His younger brother Heinz Feldhoff was also known as a singer. Recordings: Eurodisc (Tiefland by d'Albert), DGG (Lulu, Meistersinger), Philips, Amadeo (Krenek's Jonny spielt auf) and HMV-Electrola (Mathis der Maler).
