Initially he was to become an engineer and work in the family business. His beautiful voice was discovered in an amateur contest of the Herzog Film Company in Düsseldorf by the famous tenor Rudolf Schock, who helped finance his tuition. He studied at the Folkwang Musikhochschule in Essen with Clemens Kaiser-Breme and debuted in 1961 in the Stadttheater Münster (Westfalen). In 1963-65 he worked in the Opera house of Essen and in 1965 became a member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf-Duisburg, where he has remained ever since. He was very successful as a guest at the Staatsoper Vienna and Hamburg, at Covent Garden (1971 as Fasolt, Hunding and Hagen; in 1973 as the Landgraf); and in 1967-69 at the Metropolitan (debut: 1967 as Hunding). as Fafner in Rheingold and in 1976 as Hans Sachs. He was very successful in the Easter Festival of Salzburg beginning in 1967; in 1974 he sang Sachs under von Karajan. He was at Bayreuth from 1967: Titurel (1967, 1969-72, 1975-77), Fasolt (1967-75), King Heinrich (1967-68, 1971-72), Pogner (1968-70, 1975), Hans Sachs (1973-75), Daland (1970-71), Hunding (1970-76), Hagen (1970-77) and King Marke (1975-77). He was a guest at La Scala in Milan, at the Opera of Rome, the Teatro Colòn Buenos Aires, the German Opera house in Berlin, in Mannheim and Stuttgart, at the Grand Opéra Paris (1967: King Marke, in 1978 as Ochs) and at the Chicago Opera. In 1989 he was a guest at the Vienna Festwoche in Schreker's Die Gezeichnete. He also sang with great success in the concert hall as soloist in oratorio and sacred vocal works. His mighty voice reached its pinnacle in the Wagner repertoire and in such buffo roles as van Bett, Kezal, Falstaff and Ochs. Recordings: Electrola (Fidelio, Meistersinger, Tristan, Königskinder), DDG (Pfitzner's Palestrina, Fliegende Holländer, Lohengrin, The Ring, Parsifal, Capriccio), Eurodisc (Cornelius' Barbier von Bagdad, Martha, Verdi's Requiem), Philips (Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, Meistersingern), Acanta (Zar und Zimmermann), Decca (Lustige Weiber von Windsor), RCA (Orpheus" by Monteverdi/Orff), Koch Records (E.T.A. Hoffmann's Undine), Arkadia (Rosenkavalier).
