Since his debut at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma in 1985 as Duca di Mantova in Rigoletto, Luca Canonici has enjoyed a career in many important productions in some of Europe's most important theatres. Italian audiences have heard him at the Teatro alla Scala, in Florence, Venice, Bologna, Parma, Rome, Naples, Bari, Catania, Verona, Palermo, Genoa, Bergamo, Rovigo, Treviso, Modena, Ferrara and at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro.

Luca Canonici's international career brought him also to Paris, Geneva, Munich, Nice, Lyon, Zurich, Aix-en-Provence, Madrid, Oviedo, Vienna, Bonn, Berlin, Salzburg, Wiesbaden, Tokyo and Moscow, having worked with such conductors as Bruno Bartoletti, Bruno Campanella, John Eliot Gardiner, Gustav Kuhn, Eduardo Mata, Riccardo Muti, Daniel Oren, George Solti, just to name a few.

In 1997/8 Luca Canonici sang in The Merry Widow at the Royal Opera House-Covent Garden in London and in Verona, Wolf-Ferrari's Il campiello at Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Eva and L'amico Fritz at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples and in Gianni Schicchi with Teatro Comunale di Bologna on tour in Japan, where he also gave some concerts.

In 1998/9 he met with an outstanding success as Andres in Wozzeck at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo and as Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi at the Köln Opera and with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra in Munich.

1999/2000 season brought him to the Teatro alla Scala and to the Théâtre du Chatelet in Paris for a new production of Luciano Berio's Outis, to Utrecht and Amsterdam for Puccini's Messa di Gloria, to the Opernhaus in Zurich, to Lecce and to the Wiener Staatsoper for L'elisir d'amore, to the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma and to Siena for La traviata, to the Teatro Comunale di Bologna for Gianni Schicchi. Last season he portrayed with success the role of Tebaldo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi at the Teatro Massimo Bellini di Catania, Evgenij Onegin at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma and concerts at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia di Roma, at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, in Munich with the Bayerischer Rundfunkorchester and, more recently, with the Orchestra Haydn di Bolzano. He has just enjoyed great success singing as Rodolfo in La bohème at the Teatro Pergolesi di Jesi, a role he has subsequently revisited in Ljubljana, and as Macduff in Macbeth in Messina. Luca Canonici has also recently made his role debut as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni at the Festival Euro Mediterraneo in Rome, in La memoria perduta at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma and in the world première of Il fantasma nella cabina (Cecè Collura) at the Teatro Comunale di Modena, and then in Lucca and Messina. He has also returned to Munich for L'arlesiana by Cilea (Federico) with the Bayerischer Rundfunkorchester and to Tokyo for La traviata (Alfredo Germont).

Highlights of his future engagements include Il Mistero del Finto cantante in Siena with the Accademia Musicale Chigiana and Il fantasma nella cabina at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma.

Luca Canonici's most successful roles of the last seasons have included I quatro rusteghi in Parma, I Capuleti e I Montecchi in Genova, Gianni Schicchi at the Teatro alla Scala and Al Cavallino Bianco in Palermo. He was also heard in Luciano Berio's Outis at la Scala, L'Arlesiana at Teatro Regio di Parma, Dvorak's Requiem in Florence, Linda di Chamounix in Bologna and La traviata in Palermo.

His repertory also includes such works as L'elisir d'amore, Falstaff, La sonnambula, Don Pasquale, Werther, La Bohème. He has also enjoyed successes in Ermione, La pietra del paragone, Orphée aux Enfers, Paisiello's Il barbiere di Siviglia, Fra' Diavolo, Leoncavallo's La reginetta delle rose, La principessa della Czarda and in rarely performed works such as Donizetti's Il furioso all'isola di Santo Domingo and Mayr's La rosa bianca e la rosa rossa (both released on CD for Nuova Era), Rossini's Le nozze di Teti e Peleo.

Luca Canonici's discography includes an operatic arias recital (Erato), La sonnambula (Nuova Era), Il Signor Bruschino (Claves), Don Pasquale (Erato), La grande notte di Verona, La favorita and La cambiale di matrimonio (Ricordi), Linda di Chamounix (Europa Records), Falstaff with Georg Solti (Decca), Verdi's Messa da requiem with John Eliot Gardiner (Philips).

Luca Canonici was born and lives in Montevarchi, Toscana. He was a student of Tito Gobbi and Rosetta Noli.
