His initial singing studies took place in Vienna with Kolo and in Moscow with Perkow. He made his debut in 1973 at the Stuttgart State Opera as Daland and immediately scored a great success. He won prizes at competitions in Barcelona (1971, 1974) and in Paris (1972).He made guest appearances at the Opera Houses of Barcelona, Lisbon and Venice. He became a member of the Vienna State Opera in 1976 and remains one today. Guest appearances at La Scala led to the Salzburg Festival, where he sang Publio in La clemenza di Tito (1976, 1979), Rocco in Fidelio (1982-1983), in Monteverdi's Ritorno d'Ulisse in patria (1985, 1987), Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail (1987-89), in Un ballo in maschera (1989-90), smaller parts in Salome, Der Rosenkavalier, Macbeth and Die Zauberflöte (1982-86), the Commendatore in Don Giovanni (1986). Additionally, he took part in concert versions of Jeanne d'Arc au bûcher by Honegger (1977), Oedipus Rex by Stravinsky (1982) and Danton"s Tod by von Einem (1983). He sang in Mahler's 8th Symphony (1986) and appeared in Mozart concerts in 1981 and 1985. At the Bayreuth Festival he took over the part of Hans Foltz in Die Meistersinger, the Steersman in Tristan and one of the Knights in Parsifal. In 1986 he toured Japan with the Vienna State Opera and made a guest appearance as Ochs at the Teatro Regio, Turin. In 1989 he sang Gurnemanz at the Teatro Fenice, Venice, in 1989 Ochs at the Maggio musicale in Florence, in 1990 Rocco at the Scala, Milan, and Pimen in Boris Godunov at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona. He aldso sang Ochs at the State Theatre, Hannover, in 1995 at the Teatro Comunale, Bologna, and in 1996 at Covent Garden. He appeared as the Grand Inquisitor in Don Carlo at the Teatro Regio in Turin, as Osmin at the Festival of Schwetzingen (1991), as Padre Guardiano in La forza del destino at the Maggio Musicale in Florence (1992), as Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Munich State Opera (1993), as Ochs at the Opéra Bastille (1993), as the Landgrave in Tannhäuser at the Teatro San Carlos in Lisbon.In 1995 he was hear as Fasolt and Hagen in The Ring at the Vienna State Opera, that same year as Pimen at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin and as Sarastro in Amsterdam. He repeated his Hagen at Covent Garden and added the Grand Inquisitor (1995-96) both there and at the Théâtre Châtelet. He was also very active as a concert and oratorio bass. In 1992 he sang the solo bass part in Beethoven's 9th Symphony at the Bonn Beethoven festival.
