He studied at the Academy of Music of Aalborg and Aarhus, and was a pupil of the well-known teacher Paul Lohmann in Wiesbaden. He made his debut in 1978 as a baritone in a concert. Beginning in 1979 he sang as a baritone at the Jutland Opera in Aarhus, and since 1984 at the Royal Opera House in Copenhagen: Erik in Drot og Marsk by P.Heise, Malatesta in Don Pasquale, the title role in Eugene Onegin, Count di Luna in Il trovatore, Posa in Don Carlo, the Herald in Lohengrin and Papageno. At the age of thirty, he decided to become a tenor and resumed his studies under Susanna Eken at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen. He then went to New York for three months of study under Oren Brown at Juilliard and debuted as a tenor (Dimitri in Boris Godunov) in 1988 at the Royal Opera House in Copenhagen. Then followed Parsifal (1989); Erik in Der fliegende Holländerand Spalanzani in Les contes d'Hoffmann. He triumphed as Siegmund at Bayreuth in 1990, then in 1991-1992 and 1994-1996. Bayreuth heard his Parsifal in 1992 and 1996, Melot in 1993 and in 1995-96, the Steersman in Der fliegende Holländer. His most succesful role, Siegmund, was also heard at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, at the Vienna State Opera (1993-1995), in Hanover and in Mannheim, at Covent Garden (1991), at the Jutland Opoera House in Aarhus (1993), in Oslo (1994) and in Chicago (1996). In 1992 he appeared guested as Parsifal at the Opera House in Antwerp, in Berlin and at the Vienna Sate Opera. In 1994 he sang Erik at the Berlin State Opera. He was heard as Parsifal in Montpellier in 1995, as Siegmund at the Vienna State Opera and in San Francisco, in Saul og David by C.Nielsen in Copenhagen in 1996. He has also appeared as a concert performer and as a soloist with the Danish Radio-Symphony Orchestra.
