Studied S Barbara with Lotte Lehmann. Début Paris, O, 1960 (Amneris). Bayreuth 1961 (Venus; the first African-American artist to appear there); London, CG, from 1963; Salzburg from 1964; New York, M, from 1965. Roles include Eboli, Azucena, Fricka; from 1970 has also sung soprano parts, e.g. Tosca, Salome, Lady Macbeth. She sang Cassandre in 'Les Troyens' at the opening of Paris, B (1990) and has recently assumed such character parts as Baba the Turk in 'The Rake's Progress'. Has a warm, vibrant voice and a powerful personality.
