She studied music and singing at the University of Tennessee with Edward Sambara and graduated with a degree of Master of Arts. She had already sung the role of Cherubino in a school production. Her initial appearances were mainly in oratorio singer; her stage debut following victories in several singing competitions, was as Flora in La traviata at the 1978 opening of a new opera house in Oxfield, Tennessee. She then sang Maddalena in Rigoletto in St.Louis (1979). She went to Europe to study with Hans Hotter and was engaged in 1981 by the Municipal Theatre in Bonn, where she made her debut as Emilia in Otello, followed by Dorabella and Octavian, the latter with sensational success. She has been a member of the Cologne Opera since 1982 and her burgeoning career has been studded with many guest appearances. Her greatest successes in Cologne were Cherubino (1983), Prince Orlovsky,(1985) and Octavian. She sang Cherubino at the Grand Opéra Paris in 1983 and replaced an indisposed artist as Dorabella at La Scala, where she sang Idamante, a role repeated in Vienna (1987) and at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (1989), Romeo in I Capuleti ed i Montecchi at La Scala (1987) and Octavian in Florence (1989). There were guest appearances at the Bavarian State Opera (from 1984), at the Glyndebourne Festival (as Dorabella in 1984), at the Opera Houses of Oslo (1986), San Diego (1986), Toronto (1987) and at the Hamburg State Opera (1988). That same year, she sang Sesto in La clemenza di Tito at the Salzburg Festival. She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera during the 1990 season as Siebel in Faust and appeared there as Dorabella (1991) and as Octavian. She sang Charlotte in Werther at the Michigan Opera (1989), Octavian in Toronto (1990), Bellini's Romeo at the San Francisco Opera (1991), Dulcinee in Don Quichotte by Massenet at the Teatro Comunale in Florence. At the Schwetzingen Festival she sang in Salieri's Falstaff (1995), at the Opéra Bastille, Paris, Idamante and in Washington, Dorabella. Additionally she has been most successful as a concert singer, particularly as an interpreter of the works of J.S.Bach. She married Tenor Randall Outland, a member of the Cologne Opera since 1981.
