The Swedish tenor was born in Stockholm, where he also attended the Opera School. In 1973 he made his debut in the role of Rodolfo in 'La Bohème' in Göteborg, where he also appeared in many operetta roles from Bettelstudent to Fledermaus. From 1973 to 1981 Gösta Winbergh was a member of the Royal Opera Stockholm where he sang the leading roles of his repertoire: Rodolfo, Don Ottavio, Count Almaviva, Tamino, Nemorino, etc. During this period he also appeared at the Dottningholm Festival in 'Cosi fan tutte' and 'Die Meistersinger' (David). Both productions were staged by Prof. Götz Friedrich and marked the beginning of Gösta Winbergh's international career. As of 1981, Gösta Winbergh has been a permanent guest at the Zurich Opera singing all the major Mozart roles, particularly in those productions conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt and stages by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle. Gösta Winbergh is by now one of the best known guests at all the major opera houses in the world, appearing in Hamburg, Munich, Berlin, Amsterdam, Vienna, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Florence (Maggio Musicale), Milan (La Scala), Rome, London (Covent Garden), New York (MET), Chicago, San Francisco, Houston, and at many Festivals: Salzburg Easter and Summer Festival, Aix-en-Provence, Glyndebourne, Munich, Tanglewood, etc. in 1983 Mr Winbergh made his Metropolitan Opera debut in the role of Don Ottavio in Mozart's 'Don Giovanni' and has appeared there regularly since then. Conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Marek Janowski, Seiji Ozawa, James Levine, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Lorin Maazel, Sir Colin Davis, Christian Thielemann and others are asking for Mr Winbergh to take part in their productions. His discography includes 'Don Pasquale' (EMI), Liszt: Faust Symphony (EMI), Bizet: Te Deum (Decca), Hamlet (Decca), Mozart: Concert Arias (Decca), Mozart: Coronation Mass, 'Cosi fan tutte'. 'Entführung aus dem Serail' and 'Die Gurrelieder' (all for Decca), 'Die Zauberflöte' (Erato), 'Don Giovanni' and 'Elisir d'amore' (DGG), as well as numerous broadcasts and telecasts. Also in 1995 'Ariadne', Bacchus (Erato). A Strauss Lieder recording with Friedrich Haider has been released in May 1993. Meanwhile, Gösta Winbergh moved on to the roles ot the Italian repertoire (Don Jose - planned again for the Metropolitan Opera New York in 2002, Rodolfo, Cavaradossi, etc. and since 1992 with sensational success roles of the Wagner-Fach like Lohengrin, since 1993 also Stolzing 'Die Meistersinger' (Deutsche Oper Berlin; Covent Garden, London), Emperor 'Die Frau ohne Schatten') in Zurich in November 1994. In Berlin, Zurich and Stockholm he has performed 'Parsifal'. Erik 'Flying Dutchman' has been added to Mr Winbergh's repertoire in 1995 at the La Fenice in Venice, Florestan 'Fidelio' followed in 1996 in Zurich and Vienna and other places. From the season of 1999/2000 on Gösta Winbergh will sing the 'heavy' roles of the German Heldentenor Fach like Siegmund 'Walküre', Siegfried 'Siegfried', 'Götterdämmerung' and 'Tristan' at the Vienna State Opera, in Stockholm and in a new production of the 'Ring' in Zurich. Gösta Winbergh is also a highly reputed concert singer and has given Lieder recitals at all the major music centres.
