Martin Andrea
baritono

The Italo-Austrian baritone Andrea Martin studied at the Vienna Music University. After a brief intermezzo as a member of the Opera Studio of the Vienna State Opera, he pursued his musical training with Gianna Pederzini at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome.

In addition, he also took part in a series of master classes with internationally renowned artists such as Hans Hotter, Giuseppe Taddei and Walter Berry.

In 1982 he made his highly acclaimed stage debut as Corrado in Donizetti's "Maria di Rudenz" at Venice's Teatro La Fenice. This soon brought him further engagements at other prestigious opera houses in Italy, including the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, Teatro Filarmonico di Verona, Teatro San Carlo Naples, Teatro Bellini Catania, Teatro Verdi Trieste and Teatro Massimo Palermo.

As an internationally sought-after baritone, Andrea Martin has since guested at many European opera houses and in leading concert halls such as the Teatro Sao Carlos Lisbon, Teatre de Liceu, the Théâtre de Champs-Elysées in Paris, the Prague National Theatre, the Musikverein and Konzerthaus in Vienna, the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Megaron in Athens or the Prinzregententheater in Munich.

Moreover, he has made repeated appearances in high-profile baritone roles at prominent music festivals such as the opera festivals in Ravenna and Macerata, the Vienna Festival, the Festival dei due mondi in Spoleto, the May Festival in Wiesbaden and the Tyrol Festival.

In addition to his busy opera and concert agenda in Europe, Martin - an avowed cosmopolite - has also undertaken a series of tours to North and South America, Japan and Taiwan. He has worked with distinguished conductors among whom Georges Prêtre, Gabriele Ferro, Alberto Zedda, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Gustav Kuhn, Alain Lombard and Eliahu Inbal are the best known.

Andrea Martin is admired by audiences around the world not only for his robust and highly colorful baritone voice, but also for his extraordinary stage presence and interpretive verve. Beyond all considerations of vocal type, he delights his audiences both in the German and Italian repertoires, and is in international demand equally as a stylistically pure Mozart interpreter and in the great Verdi roles such as Rigoletto, Falstaff, Macbeth, Nabucco and Simon Boccanegra. Martin is also an acclaimed Wagner and Strauss singer too, and his preferred roles in this domain are Alberich, the Duke in "Guntram" and the music teacher in "Ariadne auf Naxos." Among the most recent highlights of his career are, next to concert tours to Caracas and Guatemala, new@productions of "Götterdämmerung" at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste, "Ariadne auf Naxos" at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples and Manfred Trojahn's "Enrico" at the Opernhaus Graz.

In summer 2002 the artist could be heard once again as Alberich in "Rheingold" and Dr. Falke in Strauss's "Die Fledermaus" under Gustav Kuhn at the Tyrol Festival. The latter production was recorded for a CD by Arte Nova. Andrea Martin has also taken part in many television and radio broadcasts and already has a number of highly admired CDs to his credit, including Wagner's entire "Ring" cycle as well as some rarely performed operas by Keiser, Salieri and Donizetti.
