Gérard Korsten's recent engagements have included concerts with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie and Vienna Chamber Orchestra (with soloists Eva Mei, Viktoria Mullova & Till Fellner), concert performances of "Bastien und Bastienne" & "Der Schauspieldirektor" in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, "La Sonnambula" at the Teatro Regia di Parma and "Idomeneo" in Ancona. A former pupil of the legendary Sandor Végh, Korsten learned his craft as Concert Master and Assistant Musical Director of Camerata Salzburg, and as Concert Master of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, which he repared for many eminent conductors and also conducted in Vienna, Rome, Berlin, Ferrara and Frankfurt, leaving in 1996 to concentrate solely on his conducting career. |
A native of South Africa, Korsten's victory in the 1980 SABC Conducting Competition resulted in invitations from the major S. African orchestras and opera houses. From 1994-8 he was Principal Conductor of the Uppsala Chamber Orchestra in Sweden, and from 1997-1998 Principal Conductor at the State Theatre in Pretoria, South Africa, taking up his present position as Musical Director of the Orchestra del Teatro Lirico di Cagliari in the 1999/2000 season. In Cagliari he has conducted Die Zauberflöte, Don Giovanni, Lucia di Lammermoor, Carmen, Die Fledermaus, Tosca, Aida, Barbieri di Siviglia, Don Pasquale, and the first Italian performances of Richard Strauss' Die ägyptische Helena, Weber's Euryanthe, and Delius' A Village Romeo & Juliet. As part of an ongoing co-operation between the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari and the Italian company Dynamics, Gérard Korsten's performances of Die ägyptische Helena, Don Pasquale, Euryanthe, and A Village Romeo & Juliet are now available on CD and DVD. |
Gérard Korsten is a regular guest of the Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg (Salzburg Festival debut 1995) Camerata Salzburg, Budapest Festival Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen (Berlin Festival debut September 1998), Orchestre National de Lyon, and the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI Italia, conducting regularly in the Vienna Konzerthaus, Grosses Festspielhaus Salzburg, and Amsterdam Concertgebouw. Forthcoming engagements include Tosca (New National Theatre Tokyo), Idomeneo (Flemish Opera), Alfonso und Estrella (Cagliari), Cosi fan tutte (Maggio Musicale Fiorentino), concerts in Cologne, Montpellier, Paris, Florence and Melbourne, and tours with Camerata Salzburg (Angelika Kirchschlager) and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie (Viktoria Mullova).@ |
