Canadian Adrienne Pieczonka is well known as one of the leading sopranos in Europe today. She was raised in Burlington, Ontario and studied music at the University of Western Ontario and at the University of Toronto's Opera Division. In 1988 she won major prizes at the following international singing competitions: s-Hertogenbosch (Netherlands), Toulouse, and La Plaine sur Mer (France). In 1989 she joined the Vienna Volksoper where she gained huge critical acclaim as Tatyana in a Harry Kupfer production of Eugene Onegin in 1990 as well as singing leading roles in many operas and operettas. In 1991 she became a member of the Vienna State Opera, where she continues to appear as a guest today. Her roles include Countess, 'Le Nozze di Figaro', Donna Anna, 'Don Giovanni', Desdemona, 'Otello', Tatyana, 'Eugene Onegin', Agathe, 'Der Freischütz', Eva, 'Die Meistersinger', Elsa, 'Lohengrin', Antonia, 'Les Contes d'Hoffmann', Die Tochter, 'Cardillac' amoung others. Adrianne made her British debut at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 1995 singing Donna Elvira in 'Don Giovanni' which was also recorded for T.V. and Video, and in 1996 she returned to sing the title role in 'Arabella' for which she received unanimous critical acclaim. She is a frequent guest in many of the world's leading opera houses including: Zurich, Geneva, Hamburg, Munich, Berlin, Dresden, Paris, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Toronto, Florence, Milan etc, and has sung under the following conductors: Riccardo Muti, Sir Georg Solti, Claudio Abbado, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Sir Neville Marriner, Anthony Papano, Loren Maazel among others. Upcoming highlights include 'Alice Ford' in a new production of 'Falstaff' in Munich under Zubin Mehta in January 2001. Her US debut will be made as Elsa in a new production of 'Lohengrin' in Los Angeles in September 2001 under Kent Nagano. She will make her Covent Garden debut in 2002 as Donna Anna in a new production conducted by Sir Colin Davis. Other operatic debuts include Lisa in 'Pique Dame' at La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera, the title role in 'Ariadne auf Naxos' in Barcelona and the title role in Katja Kabanova' in Hamburg. She will make her operatic debut at the Salzburg Festival singing the Marschallin in a new production of 'Der Rosenkavalier' conducted by Giuseppe Sinopoli in 2003. Adrianne Pieczonka has sung many concerts in Europe and abroad, most recently Strauss' 'Four Last Songs' at the Palais Garnier, Paris, and in Nice. She recently sang Beethoven's 'Ah Perfido'! under Loren Maazel in Munich with the Bavarian State Orchestra and sang Beethoven's 9th Symphony at La Scala under Riccardo Muti. She will give orchestral concerts at the Salzburg Festival in both 2001 and 2002. On May 29 2001, she will sing a solo recital at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto. |
