As a youth in South Africa and South Rhodesia, he wanted to study theology, but began voice training in Grahamstown (South Africa) with Mrs. Annie Hartmann and the Grubers, then with Adolf Vogel and Julius Patzak in Vienna, with F.Carvino in Düsseldorf and Clemens Kaiser-Breme in Essen. His stage debut in 1959 was as Tobias Mill in Rossini's Cambiale di matrimonio with the Viennese Chamber Opera. He sang with the Landestheater of Linz (1960-63) and one season at the Opera of Wuppertal before becoming a member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf-Duisburg, where he stayed untill 1967. Thereafter his career was focussed in London, where he first appeared with the Sadler's Wells Opera (debut as Mozart's Figaro). Guest performances brought him international prestige. In 1963 he toured South Africa and in 1967 he debuted at the La Scala, then sang Sachs the following season. His Sachs was heard at Manchester (1967) and with the Sadler's Wells (1968). With Sadler's Wells he also sang Wotan (1973) and in the English premiere of Prokofieff's War and Peace (1972). He joined Covent Garden Opera in 1972 and triumphed at Bayreuth: 1969-70 as Sachs, 1971 as Amfortas, 1970 as Gunther. In 1975 he appeared at the City Opera New York and again at La Scala. His Met debut in 1976 was as Sachs, followed by the Walküre Wotan, Amfortas, Jochanaan and Orest. He appeared as a guest at the State Operas of Munich, Hamburg and Vienna (1976-81). At the Opera North (Leeds) he was heard as the villains in Les Contes d'Hoffmann (1980), then (1986-88) in La Prise de Troie by Berlioz, Nozze di Figaro, La bohème and Verdi's Macbeth. He sang Sharpless for the Scottish Opera Glasgow(1987), Strominger (La Wally) (1990) at Bregenz and in War and Peace at San Francisco (1991). At the Glyndebourne Festival, he was heard as Schigolch in Lulu (1996). In 1985 he sang in the world premiere of Alexander Goehr's Die Wiedertäufer at Duisburg. Throughout his opera career he enjoyed substantial success on the concert stage and in Lieder recitals. He took up residence in Bedford (England) and in 1985 married the soprano Kristine Ciesinski (1952-).
