She studied voice at the Royal College of Music in Manchester with Frederic Cox, and later at the Opera Centre in London. During her studies she sang in 1968 in Manchester in the opera Temistocle by Johann Christian Bach. She made her debut in 1975 at the English National Opera in London as Rossweise in Walküre. Her career began to flourish at this opera house and also at Covent Garden (from 1982) and other English houses. At the beginning of her career, she sang both soprano and mezzo roles; for instance, she sang the Countess in Nozze di Figaro with the Glyndebourne Touring Opera in 1976 and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni in 1977 before switching to mezzo roles, then ultimately back to soprano. In 1979 she attracted attention at the English National Opera as Miss Jessel in Britten's The Turn of the Screw, and in the same year won the Concours of Sophia. In 1980-81 she appeared at the Stadttheater Bern in Switzerland. In 1981 she sang Aida at the opera in Frankfurt am Main. In 1983 she made her US debut as Medora in Verdi's Il Corsaro at the San Diego Opera. In the same year she sang Daphne at a concert performance in New York. In 1987 she appeared at La Scala as Gluck's Alceste, in Lyon, and Norma in Santiago, Chile. In 1984 she was a great success as Maddalena in Andrea Chénier and Verdi's Desdemona at Covent Garden. Her success was repeated at Glyndebourne and on tour with the Glyndebourne Touring Opera. In 1984 she sang Cherubini's Medea (a role she was noted for) at the Buxton Festival. She was Desdemona at the Dallas Opera, and Norma in Pittsburgh in 1985. That same year she appeared at the Arena di Verona. She was Cherubini's Medea again in 1989 (and before that in Lausanne). Numerous performances followed at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires (1987), Geneva and Bonn (1988) and at the Teatro San Carlos Lisbon (1989). In 1990 she made her debut at the Vienna Staatsoper as Amelia in Un ballo in Maschera; in 1990 she sang Lady Macbeth at the opera in Frankfurt. In 1991 she appeared as Leonore in Il trovatore in Munich, Tatiana in Eugene Onegin in Pittsburgh, and in 1990 Tosca at the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago. In 1993 she was Desdemona at the Wiesbaden Festival, Kundry in Jutland and Gioconda at Opera North Leeds. In 1995 she was Lady Macbeth in San Diego, and Santuzza at the Berlin Staatsoper. She gave a splendid concert debut in 1976 in the Purcell Rooms in London. She has also appeared on English radio and television on numerous occasions.Recordings: HMV (Maria Stuarda, Otello, Les contes d'Hoffmann), DGG (Trovatore, Forza del Destino, La bohème), Orfeo (La Vestale), Forlane, Chandos.
