In 1976 he also appeared as Don Ottavio at the Salzburg Festival, where in 1981 he participated in the world premiere of Baal by F. Cerha, and in 1991 sang Idomeneo. His American debut was in Chicago (1980) as Don Ottavio, a role he also sang in 1981 at the German Opera House, Berlin. In 1985 in Zürich he sang the role of the Emperor in Die Frau ohne Schatten. Later, he added character roles to his wide stage repertoire. He was heard at La Scala in 1987 as Herod, in Bologna as Loge, and on the Italian Radio as Ägisth. From 1987-88, he appeared at the Teatro Real Madrid in both Wozzeck and Lulu. At the Komische Oper Berlin he sang the title role in the Offenbach operetta Bluebeard, in Zürich (1990) Peter Grimes and the Opera of Nice, the Drum Major in Wozzeck, in 1989 at the Marseilles Opera Ägisth, and in 1991 at the Hannover State Theater the title role in Pfitzner's Palestrina. He enjoyed no less success as an oratorio and lieder singer.
