After initiating studies as a teacher, he began vocal studies with Hubert Milverton-Carva in Auckland and gave his first concerts in his native New Zealand. He came to England to complete his training with Ellis Keeler in London and with Clemens Kaiser-Breme in Essen and made his debut at the Welsh Opera in Cardiff as Zaccaria in Nabucco. As a member of the Sadler's Wells Opera company between 1960 and 1967, he excelled as a Heldentenor, especially as a Wagner interpreter, but he also sang the title hero in Attila, Kaspar in Der Freischütz and bass roles in the Mozart operas. In 1967 he joined Covent Garden (debut: Fidelio. )He sang here in the world premier of the opera Victory by R. R. Bennett on 13 April 13 1970. Apart from the Wagner heroes he was heard as Jochanaan, Barak, Scarpia, Rigoletto, Wozzeck and Kaspar. He first appeared at Bayreuth as Telramund (1967-68, 1971-72), then for twenty years as the Holländer" (1969-71, 1981), Klingsor (1968, 1970, 1972), Amfortas (1987-88), Kurnewal (1974-77) and Wotan (1975-80, Wanderer 1973-80), including in the recording and the centennial performances of 1976. These appearances were followed by successful guest roles in musical centers all over the world: Staatsoper Hamburg from 1971; La Scala Milan, Vienna Staatsoper, the Grand Opéra in Paris (1973-74) and the Metropolitan Opera (debut 1975 as the Rheingold Wotan) where he was also heard as Pizarro, Sarastro and Orest. He sang Hans Sachs in the newly renovated opera theatre of Zürich. In 1990 he had great successes as Sachs in Wellington, New Zealand. In 1989 he performed at Covent Garden, in 1991 at the Opéra Bastille Paris in Berio's Un Re in ascolto, in 1991 at Covent Garden as Sarastro and in 1992 as Moses in Moses und Aron. He was heard in the Teatro San Carlos Lisbon in 1991 as Telramund, again at the Met in 1992-93 as Sachs, in 1996 at the Opera of Antwerp as Gurnemanz, at the Théâtre Châtelet in Paris as Trulove in The Rake's Progress. He also appeared in concert and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1992.
