| Mangin Noel | basso |
Initially a student of animal husbandry, he had sung as a soprano in a boys' chorus then studied as a lyric tenor and debuted as Rodolfo, followed by Cavaradossi and Matthias in Kienzl's Der evangelimann. His voice darkened and deepened, so he retrained as a baritone and debuted again as Germont in Auckland. Two years later, after further study with Domenico Modesti in Paris and Joseph Hislop in London, he emerged as a bass. Resuming his career with the New Zealand Opera Company in 1958-60, he joined the Australia Elizabethan Company in 1961, then the Sadler's Wells from 1963 to 1967. He appeared as a guest as Osmin with Glyndebourne in 1972, having sung with the Staatsoper Hamburg in 1968 as Don Pasquale, Osmin, Sarastro, Falstaff, Claggart, Truffaldino (Ariadne auf Naxos) and Geronimo (Matrimonio segreto). He was heard in the world premiere of Help! Help! The Globolinks in 1968. As a guest, he appeared at the Teatro Colón as Osmin, the Edinburgh Festival, in Paris, Venice, Prague, Seattle and at the Staatsoper, München as Fafner and Hunding. He sang Rocco in Fidelio with the Opera of Melbourne (1977) and Australian Opera Sydney (1989). Other roles included the Landgraf and König Heinrich.
