Her real name is Katarina Beyron; her parents were among the most important Swedish singers of their generation: the tenor Einar Beyron (1901-79) and the soprano Brita Hertzberg (1901-76). Catarina Ligendza began her studies in Stockholm, the Würzburg Conservatory with Henriette Klink, in Vienna, with Trude Eipper in Stuttgart and with Josef Greindl in Saarbrücken. In 1963 she got her first engagement in Landestheater in Linz/Donau, where she debuted as the Countess in Nozze di Figaro. In 1966 she came to the Staatstheater in Braunschweig for three seasons. In 1970 she had contracts with the Deutschen Oper Berlin and the Staatsoper in Stuttgart, following a contract with the Hamburg Staatsoper in 1967. She became one of the premier dramatic and Wagner sopranos of her era. At the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels she guested as Elsa in Lohengrin. In 1970 she appeared at the Salzburg Easter Festival under von Karajan. Since 1971, she has appeared in guest roles at the Vienna Staatsoper (debut role Brünnhilde). 1970 saw her triumph at La Scala as Arabella; and 1973 at Covent Garden as Senta. She came to the Met in 1971 as Leonore in Fidelio. She had great success also at the Bayreuth Festival as Brünnhilde (1971-73, 1987) and Isolde (1974-77, 1987). In 1987 she traveled with the Deutsche Oper Berlin to Japan for performances of The Ring. In 1988 she announced her retirement. Since 1975 she has been a member of the Swedish Music Academy in Stockholm. She married the oboist Peter Ligendza (1943).
