| His voice had been recognized while he was studying to become a school teacher. In 1945, after serving in World War II, he started acting in the elementary school in Aichach (Bavaria) and studying with Paul Bender, with whose son he had served during the war, with Franz Hallasch in Munich, and with Albert Mayer in Augsburg. At the age of 35, he became a 'Jugendlich Heldentenor' at the Stadttheater of Regensburg. Here he sang, among others, Riccardo in A Masked Ball, Radames and his first Wagner role: Seigmund. He began his frequent appearances at the Stattstheater of Weisbaden in 1951and began to develop into a heldentenor. From 1955 through 1959 he sang at the Cologne Opera including Hüon in Oberon at the opening of the new house. From 1956-59 he was a member of the Staatsoper in Vienna, where he sang in premieres of Matthis der Maler by P. Hindemith, and in Kardinals Albrecht by Brandenburg as the conductor. From 1959 to 1968, he was heard at the Metropolitan Opera (debut role: Lohengrin) in such roles such as Tristan, Walther von Stolzing, Erik, Loge, Siegmund, Siegfried, Parsifal and Herodias in Salome - in all, eight major roles in 57 performances. He was a guest in Munich, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Deutschen Oper am Rhein, Düsseldorf-Duisburg, Amsterdam, Brussels, Antwerp, Zurich, Bordeaux, Lyon, Covent Garden, Chicago, Baltimore, Kansas City, Toronto, Venice and Madrid.
