Originally a brew master, he began voice training with Clemens Glettenberg and Jospeh Metternich in Cologne. His stage debut was in 1963 at Cologne Opera as Erik in Flying Dutchman. Since then he has remained a leading member of the company. He has been a successful guest of the Deutschen Oper Berlin, Essen opera house, Frankfurt am Main, Wuppertal, Nürnberg, Munich, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden, Hannover and primarily at the Deutschen Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf-Duisburg. He was a guest at Covent Garden in London, opera theaters of Lyon, Nizza and Rouen, and the Wiener Volksoper. A powerful Heldentenor, his roles include the Wagner heroes, Florestan in Fidelio, Pedro in Tiefland by d'Albert, Max in Freischütz, Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana, Herodias in Strauss' Salome.
