Fuchs Barbara
soprano

Barbara Fuchs made her name singing the most important rôles of the lyrical coloratura repertoire in the great opera houses of Germany. The Frankfurter Allgemeine wrote of her Zerbinetta "She is possessed of an effortlessly rich soprano voice of immaculate beauty. What’s more, she plays the coquettish maid with charm and wit". This review highlights the two aspects of her artistic achievement: that of the actress, which had been the career she chose first, and that of the singer. Following her studies at the Zurich Musikhochschule she went on to train with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, finding in Schwarzkopf’s ideals of precise craftmanship, fidelity to the work of art and commitment to a classical conception of beauty, a vision which she could make her own.

As the daughter of opera singer Hedda Heusser, she was at home in the theatre from an early age, and performed on the stage of the Zurich Opera house while still a child. She also studied ballet there.

While a high school student she took acting lessons and began performing at the Zurich Schauspielhaus. She received singing instruction from her mother, and consequently decided to take up Music studies at the Zurich Conservatory under the tutelage of the renowned Swiss singer, Kathrin Graf.

She subsequently trained for two years at Zurich’s International Opera Studio, after which she was immediately offered work in Ulm. She made her debut there as Blondchen in Mozart’s Entführung aus dem Serail. She sang further rôles including Susanna (The Marriage of Figaro), Adele (Fledermaus) and Rosina (Barber of Seville) while continuing her training with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.

At the Salzburg Festival she received the Förderpreis of the City of Salzburg for her performance of Zerbinetta’s virtuoso coloratura aria from Ariadne auf Naxos. In the Lieder singing category, she also gained first prize for her masterclass with Professor Erik Werba. This success led to her engagement at the Frankfurt Opera, where she sang Zerbinetta in Peter Mussbach’s production of Ariadne auf Naxos, and Helena in Aribert Reimann’s Troade.

Her first Queen of the Night, under Ingo Metzmacher, also belongs to this period of intensive work in Frankfurt. It is a rôle she would later sing in all the great opera houses, as well as under Georg Tabori’s direction in a circus tent in Berlin. Mozart came more and more to be her true focus (Susanna, Pamina, Konstanze and Donna Anna).

Since 2001 Barbara Fuchs has lived in Zurich, where she gives solo singing lessons. She is a member of the Zürich Vocal Quartet, founded in collaboration with pianist Irwin Gage. As well as extensive work on concerts and oratoria she is now devoting herself primarily to lieder singing.

In recent years she was once again able to work with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. Inspiration also came from pianist Hartmut Höll of the Zurich Musikhochschule, where she considerably broadened her Lieder repertoire.
