Studying originally in New York with Edyth Walker and Paul Althouse, she went on to Milan with Otto Müller and Berlin with Margarete Klose. She debuted in 1953 at the Landestheater of Oldenburg as Eboli and in 1955-60 became first alto at the Städtische Oper Berlin (debut: Eboli). In 1957 she debuted at the Metropolitan as Eboli, then stayed for twenty-two roles in 232 performances over nineteen seasons in New York. Beginning in 1958, she was a regular guest at Covent Garden. In the autumn of 1958 she was celebrated at the Opera of Chicago. In Bayreuth, she sang Kundry (1961-63) and Ortrud (1962). From 1967-71 she was engaged at the Hamburg State Opera. In her native America, she was heard in Miami, Philadelphia, Seattle and San Francisco (notably the Amme in the American premiere of Die Frau ohne Schatten, and as Isolde in 1967). As a guest in Europe, she appeared at the Teatro Liceo Barcelona and at the Teatro San Carlo Naples and in 1966 she visited London with the ensemble of the Hamburg State Opera. She participated in the English premiere of Die Frau ohne Schatten at Sadler's Wells. Other roles included Dalila, the Kostelnicka, Klytämnestra in both Elektra and Gluck's Iphigénie en Aulide, Lady Macbeth, Azucena, Venus, Fricka, Waltraute, Ortrud and Santuzza. She was also applauded in concert. After her retirement, she founded an opera-studio in San José (California), and from 1984 led the San José Opera.
