He studied teaching until 1967 at the Teacher's Academy in Stockholm, then began his vocal education at the Stockholm Opera School, where his teachers included Erik Saedén, Max Lorenz, and Aksel Schiøtz. In 1969, he made his debut at the Royal Opera in Stockholm as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte. Among his many performances, he participated in the premiere on 18 January 1973 of Tintomara by Lars Johan Werle. He belonged to the ensemble of the Stockholm Opera until 1973 when he answered an invitation from the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. He developed an international reputation, particularly for his Mozart and Rossini interpretations. He made guest appearances at the Hamburg and Stuttgart State Operas as well as in Frankurt am Main, Tokyo, Nancy, and starting in 1969, at the Drottningholm Festival. He participated in the world premiere at the Munich State Opera of the operas Die Versuchung by Josef Tal in 1976, Le Roi Béranger by H.Sutermeister in 1985, Ubu Rex by K.Penderecki in 1991, and Hans-Jürgen von Boses' Schlachthof 5 in 1996. In 1987 he made a guest appearance at the Berlin States Opera as Ramiro in Rossini's La Cenerentola and in 1991, he performed Leukippos in Daphne at the Grand Théâtre in Geneva. His concert tours to the Scandinavian countries, Italy and Spain brought him great acclaim, particularly, as a Bach and Mozart interpreter. He was celebrated for his performance as a soloist in The Seasons in 1974 at the Kennedy Music Center. He is married to the mezzo-soprano Helena Jungwirth.
