Allen Tom
tenore

The American tenor, Tom Allen, was born in Chicago in 1965. After completing a Bachelor's degree in English Literature he pursued musical studies at the Manhattan School of Music in New York and the Britten-Pears School of Advanced Musical Studies in England where he worked with renowned teachers Mignon Dunn and Anthony Rolfe-Johnson. After earning a Master's degree in Music in 1991 he took part in master classes with, among others, such artists as Birgit Nilsson, Gérard Souzay, and Martin Katz. He won prizes in several international voice competitions, including a special prize in the 1991 Glory of Mozart Competition in Toronto, first prize in the Musica Sacra Bach Vocal Competition in New York, and the top prize for men in the 1995 Salzburg Mozart Competition. In 1994 he made his opera debut as Don Ottavio in Mozart's Don Giovanni in a new Graham Vick production at the New Israeli Opera. He made his opera debut in Europe in the same role in 1995 at the State Theater in Darmstadt.

Praised for the unusual range, flexibility and beauty of his voice, Tom Allen has a wide ranging repertoire which extends from the Renaissance through the present, with a special emphasis on the haute contre roles of the French baroque and the leading bel canto tenor roles of Rossini and Bellini. Mr. Allen has also performed nearly every major oratorio and is a sought-after Evangelist in the Passions of Bach.

Guest engagements have taken him to countless musical centers in Europe and North America, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, the Philharmonie im Gasteig and the Herkulessaal in Munich and the state theaters in Stuttgart and Mannheim. He has also appeared at numerous music festivals including the Salzburg Mozart Festival, the Handel Festival in Halle and the London Opera Festival. Mr. Allen has performed with many well known conductors: among them Kurt Masur, Michael Gielen, Gary Bertini or Enoch zu Guttenberg, with whom he recorded Bach's Christmas Oratorio in 1997. Among his recordings scheduled for release this summer are Mozart's Ascanio in Alba with Musica ad Rhenum on the Dutch Brilliant Classics label and a world premiere DVD recording of Jacob ter Veldhuis' oratorio Paradiso on the Chandos label.

Upcoming projects include a new production of Graun's Orfeo at the Music Festival Sanssouci with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and a series of concerts with Helmut Rilling in repertoire of Bach and Mendelssohn.

@"La Cenerentola" - Bergen, July 2002

'Don Ramiro was portrayed by Tom Allen with skilled scenic charm and abundant musicality.'@Bergens Tidende

"L'Orfeo" - Potsdam, June 2002

'...mostly because Tom Allen, in a commanding performance, made something special out his coloratura phrases. Since Allen and Herrera didn't hold anything back in the presentation of the virtuosity their roles demanded, they were the only singers who were able to fully embody their roles.'@Berliner Zeitung, Jan Brachmann

'The actual ruler of the evening was indeed Pluto, who as Master of Ceremonies, opened and closed the Rococo play. With his playful, macbre entrance the American singer, Tom Allen brought a touch of travesty in the staging. In addition Allen sang his aria with bravura and ease, and thereby placed himself at the center of the evening's performance.'@Potsdamer Neueste Nachrichten, Babette Kaiserkern

@"Die schöne Müllerin" - Starnberg, April 2002

'...made the evening into a sensation. In the end it was the precisely created tension between melancholy, doubt, rage, and romantic feeling that made the concert into a real listening experience. Tom Allen's vocal potential was fully realized.'@Süddeutsche Zeitung, Andre Krellmann

"....with beautiful and bright-voiced tenor: Tom Allen as Hippolyte." @Die Welt, Harald Ketzer

'Extraordinary demands were placed on the singers, insofar as virtuosic coloratura and wide leaps are concerned. Tom Allen lent Hippolyt a enchanting quality which shimmered throughout the entire range of his voice.' (Hippolyt et Aricie Staatstheater Darmstadt)@Das Orchester, Ingrid Hermann

'Tom Allen was exceptionally fine in his role.' (St. Matthew Passion Alte Oper Frankfurt)@Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Christian Ekowski

'Tom Allen stood out among the quartet of brilliant young soloists. The clear voiced tenor with a secure upper register told the Christmas story in a conversational fashion without any false sentimentality. He also proved himself to be seasoned performer of Early Music in the arias and impressed with his flawless coloratura singing.'

'Among the five soloists the tenor Tom Allen made the strongest impression.' @Süddeutsche Zeitung

'The vocal parts were unusually well-cast' Tom Allen sounded enchantingly beautiful.'
